Uneven Concrete Floor

We’re in the process of buying a house. The homebuyers survey has reported that the downstairs concrete floors are uneven. It points out numerous reasons why this could be but it mentions that houses in the surrounding area are believed to contain Colliery Ash/Shale hinting at potential sulphate attack.

We have spoken to neighbours and none of them have ever had a problem with their floors. We haven’t particularly noticed the floor feeling uneven, we felt a bump so pulled the carpet back in the living room to find there were tiles underneath and one tile was cracked and raised. Is this a sign of sulphate attack? We had one builder come and look at it and said because this was the only raised part it may be something to do with bitumen under the tiles.

I’ve no idea where to go next in terms of further testing to find out what it may be! Could this just be dodgy installation of the tiles or a more serious issue?

It’s fine. A lot of floors are the same. Vinyl tiles. You can have them all taken up and a smoothing compound laid if needed.
