Swings and roundabouts.
The so-called inactivity rate rose to 21.7%, the highest since 2017 driven by students or long-term sick.

It's called moving the data around to show what you want it to show.

The figure used by the government is not actually a count of unemployed people.

It is a count of people receiving unemployment benefits.

A great many tricks to massage the numbers down were introduced after they doubled under Thatcher

"The Office for National Statistics said on Tuesday that the unemployment rate sank to 3.6 per cent in the three months to July, down 0.2 percentage points from the previous quarter and the lowest since 1974.

But this was not because more people were in work. Instead, there was a new jump in the number of people who said they were not working because they were studying or had a long-term health condition — which took the economic inactivity rate up 0.4 percentage points to 21.7 per cent, well above its pre-pandemic level."

So people not working have actually increased

Did you actually read that report? And then what JohnD put as supporting information ? Not quite as good as it sounds, but headlines are great.

Not surprised, seeing too many over 60's builders back working whilst the under 55's ex-builders are taking up SKIing*.

If other industries are the same then the country really is in the doo-doo.

*SKIing - Spending the Kids Inheritance...

And on the brightside its driving wages up instead of minimum wage and no real enhancements for overtime warehouse work paying 12 quid an hour and over also time and a half for overtime with many firms directly employing people instead of going through agencies . They have even took to the skies around my way with planes dragging banners offering jobs
