Fixing plasterboard to steel beam?

Hi all,

I need to fix fireboard around the steel beam, first of all I need to attach noggins. I've been told from various tradesman that were doing other jobs in the property at the time they mechanically fix noggins however another said to just to knock them in and not attach to the steel.

What is the best practice here/building regs here? I've not asked my building inspector as of yet but can do on the next visit.

If I mechanically attach the noggins how would most go about drilling into the steel beam as they are quite thick metal?

You can drill into the web of a beam fairly easily. A nothing special drill and a good quality HSS bit is all you need. Start small, 5 or 6mm and work your way up.

Either screw through the drilled hole into timber, or fix a bolt through the timber and steel. A 6 or 8mm coach bolt will be plenty.
 
Cheers Deluks, I tried drilling a small pilot hole maybe 3mm, it's taking a long time and hardly making a dent - this is a standard handheld drill working slowly using lubricant, is there any other faster alternatives?

I have always knocked them in, a good tight fit and you should be ok, not had one fall out yet.....

Cheers, I have the tech screws already but need to do the drilling first, which is proving very difficult.

I can go down this route, but is is allowed regs and everything?

If you use noggins make sure they are atight fit, and be awarethe flange depth can vary slightly so dont assume one size fits all. Noseall’s way avoids that.

I used them to fix wall plates to 4mm thick box section without any problem using a nut driver in an electric drill

I’ve just used them in 10mm steel. It was slightly quicker to pre-drill, but it was do-able with out.

To drill the pilots I just used a 5mm Bosch drill bit from Screwfix and a Makita drill.
 
Thanks everyone for the response.

What were those that managed to screw through using the Tek screws beams made of wood?! I'm drilling with a small cobalt drill bit 3mm applying pressure not getting anywhere - web is iirc 7mm thick.
