Shower trap waste smells awful - is this normal?

I had a new shower installed a few months ago and never had a problem with previous one in 23 years. I was away for about three weeks after it was installed so didn't clean it until I came home. I found that the water was cloudy and foul smelling in the small plastic cup just underneath the chrome cover and so was the water underneath it. I used diluted white vinegar and have emptied it once a week but the smell is always there because the water is always cloudy and foul smelling. I used some sink unblocker which stopped it smelling but only for a week - now the smell has returned. Surely this isn't normal for this type of shower trap waste or is it? I contacted the company which was in charge of the installation and they are saying I'm just not cleaning it properly.

The water can only be as dirty as when it got in there really. There isn't really anything in the waste system that would normally cause that unless the water is settling and stagnating or is back up from somewhere, wouldn't be the first time that's been seen.

Cleaning it out , it should stay clear, maybe then the sewer is backfilling into trap. Did the installer do anything to the waste piles or drains?

My guess is that the waste pipe does not have enough drop on it. This means that water is staying in the pipe when it should be draining out from gravity. Hence you have stagnant water in the pipe, and hence the smell.

Is that not what the trap is there to prevent though?

If the trap is correctly assembled and with enough water in it, no smell should come from the system beyond it.

Thank you for your replies. I'm going to contact the installer again. I'll sound a bit more knowledgeable now.
