Hi all,new to the community but I would love some advice on my problem.Sorry if this is a bit long winded, but here goes.
Bought an LED light and LED mirror for the bathroom, wired the mirror to a connector in a pattress box box behind it,with twin and earth going up to the ceiling rose through the loft, wired the new light and the mirror at the rose, switched it on and both worked perfectly apart from the mirror wouldn’t work without the light being on. I bought a new double switch and that’s when my problem started, ran twin and earth from the mirror to the new wall switch wired switch one as the single switch was wired ,put a bridge in for the other switch and switched on the power put switch one on and the ceiling light came on but the stand by light was on on the mirror put switch 2 on and the circuit tripped now I can’t get the lights to work.I’ve tried taking everything out and putting it back to a single switch and I’ve taken all the wires out that I installed but I’m now getting the light staying on although it is very dim probably a bit like me I’m really puzzled by this. This afternoon I took the live wire and the black wire with a red sleeve out of the wall switch and the light is still on but dim.anyone know what I’ve done wrong or is it time to call an electrician TIA.

Make sure the trip is 'on' properly - sometimes when they trip they only trip half way and you have to switch them fully off before resetting

Thanks for the reply,it’s appreciated.Yes I’ve tried switching it on and off at the CU no difference unfortunately

I didn't read your original properly, I thought you'd meant the trip wouldn't reset.

I assume you have mixed up wires, we are going to need to know what's going on in the ceiling, it looks to be a bit messy.

Oh and we don't normally use ferrules on fixed cabling (assuming it's not flex).

Are your existing cable twin and earth or single and earth?

where os the photo of the ceiling rose ?
This afternoon I took the live wire and the black wire with a red sleeve out of the wall switch
is this the switch for the main light
the black with a red sleeve is LIVE - you have a Live to the switch and then the Live returns to the light after being switched - Switched Live

the ceiling rose MAY have 3 sets of T&E wires (as a bathroom maybe more if a bathroom fan is controlled by the light switch),

do you have a FAN ??

a simple rose will have 2 T&E - OR just 1 T&E cable from a Switched live from the switch and a neutral from somewhere - and the connection is in the loft

ith twin and earth going up to the ceiling rose through the loft, wired the new light and the mirror at the rose,
do we have a photo of the ceiling rose ?
and where you connected the T&E to it ?
and both worked perfectly apart from the mirror wouldn’t work without the light being on.
you may have connected to the switched live and neutral - so it will only work when the main switch/main light is switched on

If your third picture is the ceiling rose - then i dont see where you have connected to it - and it will just be a live from the switch and neutral from somewhere?

I bought a new double switch and that’s when my problem started, ran twin and earth from the mirror to the new wall switch wired switch one as the single switch was wired ,
Pictures of this - NO neutral in the switch from what you described - so what did you wire ? possible the neutral hence the trip

Remember colours do not mean anything , depends on how they are wired , so you cannot assume the colour black or blue is neutral , Blue/Black is often used as Live on lighting circuits as you have seen with the black wire and red sleeve - often the sleeve is not added and so the black is LIVE
maybe even the earth being used somehow for neutral or live

Hi Guys, thanks for all the info and support, originally only one twin and earth from the light fitting and was wired as in the photo
The wall switch had red to L and black with sleeve to L1 and earth to back box.In the loft there is only one T+E going to the fitting, when I put the wires back to where they were originally I was getting 244v at the wall when on,0 when switched off,the sleeve was constantly 244v.At the ceiling T+E again 244v at red and 244v at black.on the LED light brown 156v and dropping .

the switch only has Live - so not sure what you have done from the description
originally only one twin and earth from the light fitting and was wired as in the photo
or photo
originally only one twin and earth from the light fitting and was wired as in the photo

you would need to measure between the lives and earth
you have live coming into the switch - either L or L1 , which is permanent live , and then when switched the other terminal will be live when the switch is made, and that returns somehow to the light fitting
the light fitting will also have the neutral which not sure where that comes from - assuming you must have a junction box in the loft

as shown in my links on wiring lights
you have 2 reds on the switch is that a T&E with 2 reds in - OR do you have 2 T&E to the switch and the neutrals are joined within the back box
not a great photo
can we see the Box as it looks like it maybe 2 cables - just not sure

Yes I have a fan but it’s independent of the wall switch although that’s not working too

Just one T+E at wall switch

so where does that go back to - a junction box somewhere
i see now its 1 T&E
the black is live - as it has red sleeving
that will go back to a junction box as shown in the links -

NO neutral there - so your mirror - where is that wired from >?

Up into the loft I would need to go up and trace where it goes

OK, so where did you connect the new T&E to ??

you will have a junction box in the loft - as that image will be a T&E with a Neutral black and the switched live Red (hopefully - BUT maynot be wired correctly at junction box for colours, so very unlikely - but could be ) Not trade but i have been involved in a lot of friends and family wiring upto 2006, and seen all sorts of things

The last post wasn’t about the mirror the mirror isn’t connected anywhere at the moment I’m just trying to get the light working again

ok,
so the switch looks OK
and the light maybe OK
it will all be about the junction box and what you did there

sounds like you have a meter -

is it still tripping ? and whats tripping the RCD or MCB or RCBO ?

did you take a photo of the Junction box - BEFORE you connected up another T&E to it ?
