There are a few deep cracks in the rendering of what is an old stone building with really thick walls.
I have read that to use mastic rather than a mortar preparation ,preferably with lime in addition to the cement is an inferior job.

Is that the way to go ?I think there are products like Toupret that are designed for this job but I am not sure if I can get that in the local hardware store.

Can I go far wrong if I make up my own mixture with sand ,cement and a bit of a very old bag of old hard lime that I have lying around?(they don't get too old do they? I could either sieve it or soak it in water and turn it into a putty )

Is it important to pva the crack before filling it ?
