Space stuff...

The reason for methane is because it is abundant on other planets and or their moons in various forms. So we can refuel there.

why do you say 100 years and not 50 or 30?

what is needed that cannot be developed and tested in the next 10-15 years for example.
It has taken many decades to safely transport a manned craft around the moon. This is on our doorstep. This is with some of the most powerful tech, science, understanding of space, money can buy. The idea of transporting people so far away from the sanctity and safety of Earth, for so long and keeping them alive, sane and in one piece se3ms like an impossibility, never mind a century.

Nope, that's a fringe benefit at best. It's because it's cheap and it burns cleanly and it is easier to work with.

Hydrogen burns cleanly and gives good thrust per kg, but it's around 25-30x more expensive and it's a pain to store or use. Kerosene is even cheaper amd gives reasonable thrust per kg, but it clogs up rocket engines so it makes the engines less reusable.

Methane isn't particularly plentiful on anywhere we want to land, but it can in theory be made on Mars or the Moon. But so could hydrogen, and more easily as the chemistry is simpler.

you may be missing the acceleration of development effect. It's not linear.

I’m missing nothing. The truth here is laid bare. Space is extremely hostile to humans and is why we have never left the sanctity of this planet. Enduring long periods far away from the Earth, are ..er..miles away.
Mars is a vey distant possibility. I’m doubtful the first voyage will be survivable, unlike the first lunar landing. We might get there, I doubt they’d get back.
Long distance space travel needs a major breakthrough.

What breakthrough would that be? Are you just worried about travel times?

Keeping humans alive for long durations in space mainly, without help or sanctity from the mother planet. Landing on another planet. And taking off again and keeping the humans alive whilst doing so.

As Brig said, space is constantly trying to kill humans and is extraordinarily hostile. Humans are very needy.

The rich *******s in space are only in low earth orbit. They don’t leave the Earth.

Have we ever really left….
