Replacing a sectional garage roof

Evening all

I've had a couple of quotes for replacement of the pitched asbestos roof of my sectional garage. Not unreasonable quotes, but I'm thinking about a DIY option. The current roof doesn't leak at all, so its not a repair, but an upgrade to a non-asbestos roof that I'm thinking of.

I don't know the technical terms for the internal components of the roof, but the asbestos sheets are laid on and fixed to a total of 12 L-shaped metal supports that span between the 2 concrete cross members inside the garage and the garage ends. I'm thinking of replacing with corrugated metal, but I don't know how they'd be supported and I'd also need anti condensation measures on the underside of the sheets.

I would of course have the asbestos sheets removed and disposed of by a qualified contractor.

Any advice/ information about laying a pitched corrugated metal garage roof gratefully received, but the main question is whether I'd save any money by replacing the roof myself when the quotes I've had include disposal of the asbestos sheets.

My neighbour had an asbestos garage roof removed around 2021 for £550. Took 2 hours.
Probably cost more now.
Then you have to put on a new roof.
OSB board and felt maybe.
Look up the many posts on this forum regarding OSB garage roof...

Or you could go down the metal sheets but that can get condensation and be noisy when it rains

Many thanks. I was quoted 2.5k by a garage roof specialist last year for stripping and disposing of the asbestos, then re-covering with metal and a condensation barrier.
I guess OSB and felt is an option, but maybe I should just save up.

You can get metal roofing sheets with a 'furry' underside, this helps to resist condensation, a few vents will help as well.

Ask your council if they have an asbestos disposal service, in London boroughs, they will collect a certain amount free of charge. You have to bag and tape it up yourself, to their specifications.

We've got a few other things to pay for in the meantime and as I said above, the old asbestos roof is still watertight, so no rush. The garage is positively rammed with stuff, and although I haven't yet had an onsite survey by the firm that quoted 2.5k, I'm sure most of it would have to come out to give the builders room to work. I believe they can do the whole job in a day ( its a national garage refurb company with decent reviews) but presumably I'd still need to put as much stuff as possible outside and under tarps in case it rains.

Wrapped my roof in polythene and took to council tip for free - it's not a controlled job for a diyer.

I would replace with OSB and rubber, again easy and cheap DIY work.

I also double bagged mine and took it to the coucil waste site free of charge.

I'd have to check the asbestos disposal arrangements in this area before going ahead, but thanks.

Thanks to you also for that. Hopefully asbestos disposal is just as simple for a DIYer in our locality. I'll check.
