Another example of how cash strapped councils waste money

£ 500k wasted by a labour council, what a surprise !!!
Tell me again about the Leeds and Manchester to Euston train line.

Or "Old Oak Common to Birmingham," as it's now known.

Ha ! they have done it again Exeter CC closed a main road near the hospital (to make it safer for cyclists) (hardly any use it) without consultation causing gridlock on other local roads causing problems for ambulances getting to the hospital, now after 6 years of complaints a public consultation has come out that 73% want the road opened again, council have said it will cost £640k to remove a few bollards fill in the holes and some new road markings this is after they had to backtrack on their LTN pet project which cost them £190k to remove a few bollards and planters they had dumped in the road with a forklift to make it narrower, where do they get these figures from and why do they keep on doing these pet projects when the majority of the locals are against them.

Several years ago a bypass was built around the town. It's a perfectly reasonable bypass and most of the traffic that is heading elsewhere chose to use the bypass.

The council noticed that there was still a fair bit of traffic travelling through the town so they spent significant sums of money installing traffic lights and sequencing them to deliberately hold up the traffic in an effort to force the remaining traffic onto the bypass.

Now the council are concerned that lots of the town centre shops have closed and are standing empty. If we can't easily get our cars near to the shops then we aren't going to use them when we can shop in out of town places with easy access and free parking. It is actually quicker to travel to the next town than spend time queuing at the traffic lights.

Sounds about right. Brother works for the council and he freely admits that a sizeable percentage of the people he works with would be unemployable anywhere else. Having met them they do seem to be a certain breed of their own. Some older ones are virtually useless, but would be too expensive for the council to get rid of them.

And its no wonder that they have no money left to clean the streets etc, one seaside town town local to us have closed all the existing quite adequate working public toilets, built new portacabin like ones which are already causing probs with the doors, with the salt spray air these are not going to last 5 minutes, they havn't got a clue, couldn't run a bath.

Whether referring to local council or national government, this is what always concerns me re tax increases. They want to tax us more and more, however how much of what we already pay is wasted. Obviously it's a figure we'll never know (too many variables etc).
