can you tell me what a thermacouple is and where it is in the boiler

a thermocouple says "its hot in here", and the pilot light is present and correct. guess where it is, as for its excat location that depends on boiler, but you can not touch gas.

The thermocouple is a safety device so that your boiler if it has a pilot flame and it goes out for whatever reason gas will not continue to flow unlit into the combustion chamber , it should if all is normal shut down the main gas valve when there is no flame present . They are normally situated in and as part of the pilot assembly, which in turn can in most ( but not all) models be seen through a small observation window.
If you can come up with a boiler make/model one of the many skilled chaps on here will probably describe it and its location to perfection and all suggest a CORGI engineer replaces it for you if required.

ta for that. its a gloworm spacesaver and the pilot wont stay lit for long and if it does fire up the main burner it doesn't stay lit for long probably 10 seconds or very near

It will be a dirty pilot causing this problem on a spacesaver, needs a service.

thanks nasdag. today the pilot has stayed lit so i thought agh great then(my pleasure didn't last long) bcos it lit up the main burner for about 10-15 seconds and then went out again it has done this numerous times and wont stay lit HELP!!!!!!!
Ok short reply........... CORGI Engineer to clean pilot jet, replace thermocouple if we are all right boiler should work.........
Hi I read your problem with interest as had the same situation 12 months ago - I have a glow worm space saver 45-60. I don't know how competent you are but undertaking the following WILL cure your problem.
1.Replace the thermocouple about £4 - on my model the capillary length is 1200mm.
2.Identify the gas pipe from the gas valve to the pilot housing
3.Unscrew the nut/union at the gas valve.
4.Unscrew the pilot housing - this makes step 5 easier
5.Unscrew the gas pipe nut at the pilot - inspect the gas pipe at this end and I'll bet the pipework is blocked or restricted with sutty deposits. Poke out with a suitable small screwdriver and blow down the pipe to ensure it is clear. If necesary feed coathanger down the pipe to "rod out". I suspect it is this which is causing your burner to go out after about 15 seconds.
6.Possible the pilot housing orifice is still blocked or restricted - as this is a small orifice and not easily accessable I would suggest replacing it typical cost is about £18.
7.Re-assemble everything.

He will need plenty of luck if he leaves a gas leak or positions the pilot incorrectly allowing gas to flow without ignition taking place. This person does not know what a thermocouple is, does not know where it is and you are suggesting self repairs. All I can say is gross negligence and irresponsibility.
footyhockeyfooty, get a registered gas engineer to call, check his CORGI card at the back for a tick against CH. It will not cost an arm and a leg but you could lose a lot more, like your life, by meddling with things you are not familiar with.

Cant agree with ChrisR enough, dont meddle with gas stuff unless you are qualified, accidents with gas usually mean fire , explosions etc.and insurance companies just love you coz they dont have to pay out to rebuild your house.

hi all back again, have had my spacesaver serviced and it stayed lit for two days and wont fire up again. any help going?
