    Five years of paint bubbles

Hello Misterhelpful Thank you so much for replying. I've checked Homebase & Wickes for "alkali resisting primer" and have not come up with a match. Have you any idea where I might but a small tin? Many thanks Jimbo

    Five years of paint bubbles

Hello For the last five years, I have had to repaint the same areas in our conservatory as bubbles develop in certain parts of the wall. The areas are in the middle of the wall. 95 % of the wall is fine and requires no attention. I have put tissue paper around areas where water may have...

Vaillant VCW-sine 18 T3 - Main burner does not fire up

Hello Tony & Gas Service Thanks so much for replying. No tests have been done to diagnose whether the solenoid is faulty. However, the diagram in the servicing manual, 9.4 Sheet 4 p53, suggests that if the differential valve is working, then the DC solenoid should be replaced. The person...

    Window with gap under sill

I have discovered a gap underneath one of my window sills. It measures 2" by 5/8" by 31". See below. Should I leave the gap or fill it with wood/cement? Many thanks. [/img]

Splashboard on Oak Door (By Sea)

It is about 100 yards from the beach and though it doesn’t get sea water all over it, there is lots of salt in the air and it is in a very exposed position on a very windy part of the coast in Sussex

Splashboard on Oak Door (By Sea)

As you can see from the pictures below, the splashboard on the bottom of the door has a small gap. (The oak door was fitted by a professional carpenter 9 years ago). It is now leaking water. I plan to fill the gap with exterior wood filler (non-shrink if it exists). Then to cover the...

    Part of ceiling collapsed

As I was doing this by myself I built a frame to hold the plasterboard in position. I was then able to screw the plasterboard in position with a small gap running round the perimeter. This gap I filled with Wickes deep filler. This leaves 3mm which I can skim plaster...

    Part of ceiling collapsed

My first job was to secure the existing ceiling. This I did by screwing dry wall screws into the laths and joists. As the ceiling was uneven I found I needed a variety of different length screws. I painted over the screws with an oil based paint to prevent rusting. I then sealed in the existing...

    Part of ceiling collapsed

For the most part this went smoothly. There were two hiccups. One was the 15mm plasterboard I ordered from a company called Building materials: http://www.buildingmaterials.co.uk/. They sent 12.5mm. After they failed to respond to my emails, we made endless phone calls on their expensive...

    Part of ceiling collapsed

I've ordered all the things I need. I've even found some 15mm plasterboard. What I can not find in the UK are Plaster Washer/Ceiling Buttons. If I lived in the US it would be easy: http://www.kilianhardware.com/ceilbutplasw.html I'd rather not wait that long. Does anyone know of anywhere...

    Part of ceiling collapsed

Many thanks for you all for your replies. Here are some further details: There was a long crack down the centre and the ceiling began to sag on either side of the crack. I meant to fix the crack, but have been in hospital for the last month, so it did not get done. There is a bedroom...

    Part of ceiling collapsed

Part of our ceiling collapsed on Tuesday morning. As you can see from the picture it is an oval shape. It is about 2m long by 1m wide and 3/4" thick. I have done a few minor repairs before using plasterboard, then used skim plaster to cover the surface, but have not attempted anything...

    Unable to open loft hatch

I secured the tongue using two bolts with the nuts on the outside of the hatch and hacksawed the thread level to the nuts. The nuts are hidden from view by the plastic catch.

    Unable to open loft hatch

Hi Thanks for the replies. I tried all your suggestions but it failed to release the lock. I decided to try to drill out the screws holding the tongue. I made a guess at where the tongue was and started to drill into the tongue itself! I then took a punch and hit it hard ... This was a...

    Unable to open loft hatch

To open my loft hatch, I normally just push it up with the end of the pole and the spring releases the door. It is not opening and I can't get into the loft to see what is wrong. Can't take the hinges off as these are also above the door. I bought a similar lock catch (see picture)...
