As you can see from the pictures below, the splashboard on the bottom of the door has a small gap. (The oak door was fitted by a professional carpenter 9 years ago). It is now leaking water.

I plan to fill the gap with exterior wood filler (non-shrink if it exists).

Then to cover the door in teak oil to protect against the weather.

Is this the best way of going about the job?

Many thanks.

Are you saying it gets washed/splashed by sea water, or are just close to the sea? ...pinenot :)

It is about 100 yards from the beach and though it doesn’t get sea water all over it, there is lots of salt in the air and it is in a very exposed position on a very windy part of the coast in Sussex

Better than any filler (shrinkage and differential movement to the door = cracks) after protecting/coating the door, apply a bead of polysulphide to the joint, starting by squeezing it it into the gap, making good as it were, finishing with a bead to seal it.
Unlike other sealants polysulphide remains flexible, therefore moves with the wood keeping the sealant intact. It forms a tough skin which you can touch etc. but underneath this it remains soft and pliable...pinenot :)
