Missing bricks in old extension brick footing

There is defiantly not a feed into the waste pipe - my only concern was it was from some other place (eg the neighboughs - but I think that's unlikely I will clear the gully and check for leaks. I think rebuilding the footing is the only way to go - If I want some solid ground to build the...

Missing bricks in old extension brick footing

I'm pretty sure the pipe is not in use it used to lead to a sewer but was filled in when the guys repaired the other drain. I'm not sure what it's use was, it could well be an old toilet that was on the ground floor but is no longer there, the room is now a kitchen extension. If I collapse...

Missing bricks in old extension brick footing

I have been digging a trench to alleviate a rising damp problem. While excavating I have found a old unused soil pipe running through the brick footing. There is no lintel and one side of the bricks are slumping down. The idea I had was dig out the area a bit more without affecting...

    French Drain

I'd like to do it properly, however I think I'm limited by aesthetics and the shear scale of earth to remove. If I don't go right next to the footing and I going to be ok?

    French Drain

Ok good advice. I was planning to leave it open to dry out, from what you have said that might not be such a good idea. The membrane I was planning on using was a geotextile one, like they use for landscaping. This should hopefully block sediment but allow water to freely pas though, into the...

    French Drain

I am after some advice, our Victorian house extension suffers from damp, there is no sign of an original DPC, it is not a suspended floor - just a concrete floor and brick foundations/footings We had a damp survey done on the house and it revealed that the concrete slab level at the back of...

Concrete Hearth - To remove or not to remove

Your absolutely right and I am being very careful with this. The pine was already split on the left side and while lifting this it split the front part further. The mattress idea is great I really don't want this thing cashing down as you say, it would put a hole in the floor. We don't...

Concrete Hearth - To remove or not to remove

eek I'm sorry about the slide show on the blog - I might turn that feature off... This baton idea is sounding more and more like a plan I am worried the hearth is not secure - only because the previous ceiling has a "large" crack in it - but this could be from the pouring of the concrete...

Concrete Hearth - To remove or not to remove

is that process, attach wood to the underside of the joists and plasterboard to that? What should I use as batons - is B&Q Treated CLS Timber any good?

Concrete Hearth - To remove or not to remove

I will take some closer pictures tonight and attach to this thread. The thing doesn't move at all - and I'm very happy to apply "if it ant broke, don't fix" My worry is if I remove that it will compromise the structure of the chimney I have limited access to the other side do the room...

Concrete Hearth - To remove or not to remove

So I have been ripping down a lath and plaster ceiling that was in bad condition. One particular area was a bulge which I honestly thought was a brick that had pushed the plaster down. After stripping the ceiling its obvious what was causing the bulge, a first floor concrete hearth that looks...
