Whole house heating, or room by room?

Since the TRV and wall thermostat are opposite sides of the room. And the wall thermostat is set higher, in the room, the TRV typically 6" from floor, and wall thermostat 4 foot from the floor, if set to same temperature, the wall thermostat will switch off before the TRV fully closes. When...

    messing around with ebikes

I look at my e-bike, hub says 350 watt, law says continual basis, and it would not produce even 250 watt through the speed range. Old e-bikes were allowed a throttle active over 4 MPH, new ones are not, I can't see a date, and bought second hand, so how do I know? The list goes on, and I have...

    practical interpretation of insulation readings

With a mineral insulated element, I would not worry too much with a low insulation resistance, as long as hard-wired, and no RCD to trip. But with an IT bit of equipment, I would want a high resistance and be testing with 250 volts. There is no one fits all. What it is and where it is matters.

    Flat heating/hotwater improvements....choices....

1980 Algeria Grove cranes were first time I found them, the problem was the cab rotated with the jib, so this allowed heating without any pipes up centre of the crane, made by Hunter, and latter same in the Falklands, they were a pain in the neck, always going wrong. Eberspacher were better...

Plug in solar, what do you think?

Update the whole article here here, 24 March 2026, 01:10 GMT It seems the debate is over? eFIXX have now also added saying how It seems the IET has raised concerns about escape routes etc. Headlines are Plug and Pray, do like that. It has pointed out how easy to overload. And asked what...

Yet Another Immersion Heater Tripping Question

I seem to remember paying around £60 to have mine replaced, the tester cost me £35, so likely replace is best option.

    Heatslave II preheated thermal store?

I have an oil boiler, rather old, with an external cylinder for DHW, so on having solar, hindsight and that's easy, I made a mistake, and had an iboost+ fitted. I now look at the cost to change, and wonder how it will work, and if to try is throwing good money after bad? So let me expand a bit...

Tesla Gateway - Planning ahead for installation

The longer the cable the greater the volt drop. I can see with my own home what the voltage is, and have viewed the solar software many times, so I know permitted voltage is +10% - 6% so 216 to 253 volts, outside that range, the solar, or EV charging point is required to disconnect, to ensure if...

Yet Another Immersion Heater Tripping Question

There has to be some guess work, when you are using extra low voltage to measure MΩ, normally we use low voltage (500 volts DC) to test with. Meter looks something like this but we can if the RCD does not trip, measure how close we are to the limit with a clamp-on meter we are permitted 30% of...

    Flat heating/hotwater improvements....choices....

My son had an Eberspacher in his narrow boat, and it seemed to work very well, other than being 12 or 24 volts, one has to ask why we have massive lumps in the house. Same with the Carver found in caravans. In both cases we now see Chinese versions. That is likely why we don't see them. Or at...

Tesla Gateway - Planning ahead for installation

I was with British Gas, and for 20 months go no payment for export, so I was very happy with Octopus, British Gas offered a better deal, but since they did not do as promised, what the offer is useless.

    Flat heating/hotwater improvements....choices....

There is no real answer. I want to cut down my own bills, and have looked at energy storage, and more economical heaters, etc. How to store energy? As hot bricks, as hot water, or chemical (batteries), and how to convert from oil, solid fuel, gas, or electric, into useable heat. The non...

Tesla Gateway - Planning ahead for installation

Ducts can be fitted for cables to be drawn through, but batteries and inverters seem to change month by month, so what seems the best option a couple of months ago, today can be old hat. Also, what can be seen as unfair practice, where firms like Octopus offer special tariffs to customers using...

Lost PC, what was on the hard drive?

It was returned to be repaired under warrantee, to remove hard drive would invalidate warrantee, and when left, I was expecting to get it back.

Lost PC, what was on the hard drive?

Took in a PC for repair, it seems it may have been disposed of, I am sure I backed up all, but it may have had documents saying what people owes me, and other items, which I regard as sensitive, possibly passwords etc. The list of passwords together with my address etc, is not something I want...

Why is my worchester boss firing when 2 degrees above set temp?

Question one has to be, is this a fault? My parent's thermostat, was designed to stop hysteresis, and so before the target it would start a mark/space ratio, turning the heating off, and on, slowly increasing the off time, and this would continue after the target as well. Today we would not use...

Trying to identify my underfloor heating cold tails

That is the normal name. @flameport has answered most of the rest, there should be a resistance between the cold tails, and also a resistance to earth. The latter above 1 MΩ the former depending on the size of the UFH. It will likely be less than 1 kW, could be as low as 250 watts, so around 200...

    messing around with ebikes

All I can say, three e-bikes wife's mid-engine, mine and sons rear hubs, are all very different, 36 volts and 48 volts, will start helping within a yard and need to do width of road before cutting in, have throttle and have no throttle, limited to 16 MPH and will still help at 22 MPH, even the...

Trying to identify my underfloor heating cold tails

There are two types of electric under floor heating, one uses resistive cable, the other some chemical impregnation, the former needs sensors to stop the floor over heating the latter one does not. I fitted the former type to a wet room, there were three connections line, neutral and earth...

Plumber explains what radiator numbers really mean and why you should 'leave it' at 3

I can see the room stat switches on when it gets cold, and the TRV switches down when it gets too warm in the room. There is a big difference between on/off and up/down. The problem is if one stays on, after the TRV has closed. This is the Harry talks about. We need to look at the...
