    Sounds like your cold feed is blocked or partially blocked. Its usually ay the point where it tee's into the system.

    Thanks Mick. I'd switched off the the system and made sure it's not timed to come on again until problem fixed. Good to hear it isn't likely to be the boiler. Sorry to ask a daft question but I take it that in order to check that the cold feed is blocked or not, I'd need to disconnect the cold...

    without going into detail your system is under positive pressure the vent/cold feed are neutral and negative pressure to the pump. so a blocked cold feed will result in the water going up the vent.

    Firstly, when i find the problem, i'll let you know. In answer to your question, the water isn't rising through the vent, its coming up through the cold feed. But this is my point, is the vent blocked meaning that the cold feed has to act as a combined cold feed and vent.

    pump by pass

    you could have a blocked feed from f/e tank.They normally get blocked at the tee where cold feed meets heating pipe.Only way to get over this is cut blocked tee out and fit new one pete

    Central Heating Difficult To Bleed

    I would suggest that the cold feed is blocked where it connects into the system pipework. Trace the 15mm (usually) feed pipe from the small tank to where it joins the system and it may well be blocked in that area.

    Help! Feed & Expansion tank won't empty!

    Cheers guys, you were right - the cold feed was blocked where it joint onto the main circuit (the T-Junction??). All sorted now - runs freely through the system.
