Is something shorting my garden lights circuit?

The main RCD tripped a couple of times a few days ago when it was raining. The only reason I could think of is that it is to do with the garden lighting. I switched the lights off and the RCD stopped tripping so it was a lucky guess! I have two questions: why didn't the fuse for the garden...

How to remove a floorboard under a doorframe

Thank you all for your help so far. I got the said floorboard out but the nails pinning the stud to the joist is as was. I am about to change the floorboards on the landing and could use your expertise with how to finish the stairwell edge of the landing.

How to remove a floorboard under a doorframe

Thanks, I learned a lot from your explanation. If I understand you correctly, every stud would have 2 skew nails. So in theory, if drive a skewed screw where the red arrow is before I cut the nail where the black arrow is, would the stud be attached to the building with one new screw and one...

How to remove a floorboard under a doorframe

How to remove a floorboard under a doorframe

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I don't mind cutting up the floorboard. If it's nailed to the joist then doing as you suggested should pretty straightforward. I've got the Bosch multitool so will get a blade and give it a go. Is this the best blade for the job?

    Noisy, moving floorboards

It would be quite easy to see if there's a problem with the joist if you lift a couple of the loose floorboards. If the joist looks sound then nailing down the floorboards (some recommend nailing + glueing) could sort the problem out. If you want a tradesman then a wooden flooring person could...

How to remove a floorboard under a doorframe

I'd appreciate your advice. How should I go about removing a floorboards from underneath the upright of a doorframe? I tried to knock it sideways but it's not budging. I'm guessing it's nailed in to the upright but I don't know if that's the case. If I can get the floorboard out I can stick a...

Changing a thermostatic cartridge in my concealed shower valve

And thanks for all your help! I'll give it a go. By O rings do you mean the three rubber seals around the body of the cartridge? In your opinion, should I install isolation valves on the hot and cold supply or will it reduce the water pressure?

Changing a thermostatic cartridge in my concealed shower valve

Right... I have the therm cartridge. I widened the opening and the collar and retaining nut are removed. I gently tried to pull out the cartridge by the end bit but it isn't budging. Any advice on what to do to get it out in one piece?

Changing a thermostatic cartridge in my concealed shower valve

The thermostatic valve I found is described as a Crosswater part but when I search for the part number on the website, it finds the Hudson Reed part which is roughly half the price. Anyone here knows if there's a difference in quality between the two original and third party parts?

Changing a thermostatic cartridge in my concealed shower valve

I haven't managed to find a 38mm box spanner. Screwfix or Toolstation don't seem to sell it. And I'd rather buy locally as I need to fix my shower asap! Arrrgggg

Changing a thermostatic cartridge in my concealed shower valve

Once I removed the cement the collar unscrewed pretty easily with a long nose pliers. Unfortunately, there is not enough room to use a spanner so my options are to use a grinder to extend the opening or get a 38mm socket to unscrew the retaining but. But that is expensive to buy for a single use

Changing a thermostatic cartridge in my concealed shower valve

Rubber strap is a good idea, I'll see if I can find someone like that. What penetrating oil can I use? Is WD-40 a no no?

Changing a thermostatic cartridge in my concealed shower valve

Now that you pointed this out it's obvious. But as you can see from the pic above, the dumbass who installed the shower valve set it too deep so the thermo collar is hard to access as it's not proud of the tiles. It's also set in cement. So after carefully chiseling the cement, how do I grab...

Changing a thermostatic cartridge in my concealed shower valve

My thermostatic cartridge in my Crosswater shower valve (handles, two outlets) need changing. It has been playing silly buggers for a couple of weeks when I couldn't get the water to go hotter although in other taps the hit water is very hot. Today it developed a leak and I found the part number...
