That joint detail doesn't make a lot of sense to me: they say they need the beam depth but then put the bottom bolts way higher than they need be greatly reducing their effect.

Just use ordinary sharp sand dried in the sun (heat wave good for once!) or the oven

B will provide easier cutting and handling of the boards. I'd just cut some strips of ply and screw and glue them to the free edge to support the second sheet.

If I were doing that job I'd rip my 8x2 into strips and glue them back together in a curve like a Glulam beam: much stronger

You stand to gain 100mm under the beam: that's not insignificant. The steel savings would probably at least partially be taken up by increased fabricating costs, though we don't know what sort of a detail your guy was using. I'm sure some SEs have shares in steel suppliers!!

Here's the detail. The house is a big 4 bed semi and this was the whle of the downstairs back wall being removed, so doubtful if yours is greatly different loadwise. SEs don't tend to like being questioned I'm afraid!

Extra weight would be negligable! Gutter clogging a bit but the main worry is the roof being damaged by size 10 boots controlled by size 1 brains. As Woody says: a nice little earner for some cowboys.
