The phase out of ice engines..

Insurers seem to be getting concerned about lithium batteries now. At this year's business insurance renewal they want to know where we store lithium batteries, where we charge them and how we dispose of them. They are not talking about huge batteries, they are asking about the ones in phones...

The phase out of ice engines..

I fit into that category. A 2 car family, living within a 20 minute walk of a town centre, have my own drive, could easily have a charge point. Currently 1 car is petrol and the other is an electric/petrol hybrid. The reason that neither of the cars are EVs so far are: 1. The extra cost of...

Best way to clean moss off ground?

More accurately the chemicals might enter the soil and ground water where they might cause a miniscule amount of harm to some organism. The little bit of theoretically dangerous chemical that we apply to weeds on our paving will make absolutely no difference to life on Earth at all. It will, of...

Mandatory ID cards (Brit Card) to be announced tomorrow

I wonder how much we will be expected to pay for these cards. Probably priced similar to a passport as they will presumably be doing similar identification checks before issuing a card.

Best way to clean moss off ground?

Be careful with that on paving. It will leave an orange stain.

Water Butt Project - has anyone done this?

I don't understand this bit: Cons: Drain pipe joints are not waterproof. When the water backs up to the level of the first joint it will leak from that joint. The pipe will carry a tiny amount of water compared to a water butt. Water in the pipe will freeze in winter and split the pipe. Pros...

    Window key replacements?

No idea if locksmiths/key cutters stock them, you would need to take the key with you and ask. Alternatively order one from the online link for £5.60 delivered.

    Window key replacements?

It looks a lot like this one: https://nwhardware.co.uk/products/avocet-lightning-key-kb102 Usually window keys are pretty generic with each manufacturer having a few varieties which they might change every few years.

    Incorrect Speed Limit Change Signage?

It isn't the size of the signs that cause problems, it is often the placement of them. Signs are often placed immediately at exits to roundabouts when people who are not familiar with the area area are busy checking direction signs, lane markings, mirrors and the positions of other road users...

Tumble dryers (heat pump) - any makes and models to go for? Any to avoid?

Do you really want a heat pump version? More expensive to buy and less reliable than a "blow air through a hole in the wall" version. Any (minimal) saving in running cost may well be offset by the extra purchase cost and short life expectancy.

Octopus Smart Meter IHD 3 Issue

My IHD from British Gas has never worked properly, they don't seem to be the most reliable things. Mine will show electricity consumption and cost correctly but for Gas it only shows consumption and not cost. Ringing British Gas didn't get it resolved. It is now in a drawer with other useless...

    Incorrect Speed Limit Change Signage?

Are there street lights? They may not need any signs at all as in areas of street lighting (other than on motorways), a speed limit of 30 mph applies unless signs show otherwise.

    Ladders on stairs, safest options?

A self constructed wooden "box" which sits on one step of the staircase to bring that step exactly level with the step above it. Then stand the ladder with one foot on the step and the other on the "box". Alternatively I have done the ladder thing with two ladders from a step to the wall of the...

Pre-winter test, Wiser thermostat delay, normal or fault?

If you have the boiler type set to Oil the Wiser system will divide each hour into 3x20 minute slots (it decides when the slots start, they don't start on the hour). A thermostat calling for heat will create a percentage demand depending on the difference between the room temperature and the...

    Flag dynamics

As I am quite bored at the moment I wasted some time reading through this. It doesn't seem to provide protocols for flags painted on mini roundabouts, zebra crossings or keep left Daleks. Perhaps it need updating?
