    Ford Focus starting problem

I bought a Focus from new nearly 3 years ago. I've had no problems with it other than a little bug that crops up every now and then. When starting the car, 999 times out of 1000 I just turn the ignition key for about 2 seconds and the engine will fire. However on the odd occasion, I will release...

help needed fitting a new light switch

Just to add to what sparky said. Regarding the short link between the commons. This is assuming that the live from the consumer unit is the one going to the common, it could have been connected to the L1, both would work. So check which is which. You should have one wire which is permanently...

    SWA terminations

I think i know what you mean. In my opinion, the best way would be as you say, gland it off into a terminal box, with a waterproof rear outlet (drilled or purpose made). Leave the inner sheath on until you reach the appliance. As for the earth, fit a banjo washer where it screws into the box...

    shelves for a bedroom

shelves will be about the width of a bed and probably 12 or 15 inch, enough to get a play station, TFT tele etc.

    shelves for a bedroom

I want to fit some shelves at the bottom of my lads bed. As there is only one adjacent wall, I would like to run something like a 2 chrome poles from floor to ceiling, then fit shelves from these poles to the nearby wall. I've looked in B&Q and they have the poles I am after, and end fittings...

    vokera 20-80 RS

My daughter has one of these boilers and the front panel on which the controls are mounted, has disintegrated. It seems that the pull down front is actually mounted on the thin panel and over time it has cracked and is now downright dangerous. Any one know where I can get a replacement...

    Ford Ka indicators intermittant fault

Just found it on the underside of the left hand side of the column. Just touched it and it started working. Tried twisting the pins slightly but it still seems intermittant. I think if I wedged it towards one side it would probably be OK. Might see how much for a new one and try that...

    Ford Ka indicators intermittant fault

I've got the two halves of the steering coumn off and can only see the switch. Are you sure it should be there. On the right hand side of the drivers footwell, there's a drop down wiring assembly with the fuses and a few relays in there too. I thought it might have been one of those.

    Ford Ka indicators intermittant fault

The indicators on my X reg Ka occasionally stop working. The hazard warning function also. It usually last a day or so, then suddenly clears itself. I've had the two halves of the steering column off, checking the connectors under there with no success. Although on two occasions, as I was...

    finishing off a garden wall

I've spent all summer building a 7 coarse high, double thickness garden wall and am nearing the end of the project, thank god. I have built 6 piers, one and a half bricks square, 328mm, where the wall changes direction and where some steps up into the garden will go. I've ;ooked around the...

    flexible armoured cable outside

SY cable is used extensively in industry, fixed to tray and other exposed areas, but I wouldn't bury it unprotected underground. I reckon a spade could cut through the braiding whereas SWA would stop one. Price wise, there is little difference so get SWA for underground purposes.

    Punto brake pads

I have a Punto, only 4 years old, and when I bought it at 23000 miles, I noticed in the service book that new brake pads had been fitted at 18000 miles. I thought this a little strange as I normally get 30000 min out of my Fords. The car has done 30000 now and during the fitting of new tyres...

    telemec contactor question

I've come across a c strange telemech contactor with a combined overload. The contactor part has A1 and A2 which are obviously the coil connection, but in between there are two more connection E1 and E2. These are also connected to a supply. I've not been able to check what does what yet...

    Fluke 1653 Error 5

Electrical machines such as DC motors and AC invertors for example put voltage spikes on the supply lines that travel all over the area. I assume that is what is happening. The factory has power factor correction and more importantly for this problem, harmonic filters. So I can't see why just...

    Fluke 1653 Error 5

Did an earth loop test on a water heater today in an office block at the factory where I work. The Fluke 1653 came up with Err5. When I checked this in the manual, I found that it stood for Error 5-excessive noise. When I checked a few other parts of the area, they too came up with the same...

Just out of interest - generator question...

The field of the alternator requires a steady DC voltage in order to create a stable magnetic field in which the rotating part of the generator turns. This rectifier could be what converts the AC into DC for this supply.

Correct Single Phase Electric Motor for Saw Bench

You can get a 2.2kW Allen Bradley Powerflex 4 from RS for about £250. Easy to set up and safe. The cost of a single phase motor would probably cost more.

    Ze & Zs

The eli includes all of the resistance in the path of a fault current. Right from the source of the supply, through the installation and back down the PE path. A tester puts a measured fault on a circuit and calculates the ELI as it knows the voltage and current. The tester then has to...
