    Walsall iron light switch

I have just bought an old Walsall one gang light switch. I want to replace one of the switches on a two way circuit with the Walsall. The wires for the Walsall are fitted thro the conduit behind the switch you can see in the photo, under the iron plate . Would it be possible to replace the one...

    Cut Perforated Steel

Its like cutting around a square beam in a ceiling The two sides are easy as you can cut down from the open top pf the sheet but the cross cut 15mm down into the sheet is difficult as you cannot get a saw in to start the cut. It is perforated steel so the cut would be through a series of small...

    Cut Perforated Steel

I am fixing a sheet of perforated steel to a wall. I have to cut around two steel stringers on three sides (approx 6" or 15mm each of the three sides). I can saw the two sides straight through from the open top but how do I cut the third at the bottom as it impossible to get a saw it there ...

Hang perforated steel sheet to wall

I have a 800mm x 1700mm x 1mm thick perforated steel sheet which I want to screw to a single brick wall. I will be using 5mm screws as the holes are that size. How many screws at what length do you reckon I will need to secure it ? I am planning on 8 40mm (1 and 1/2") screws either side. Do...

    PERFORATED STEEL PLATFORM

I am going down the fabricators to have a chat and look for off cuts. I now reckon, from what I have been told, as there is only 300mm unsupported between two 200mm supports a thicker sheet than 1mm, 3 or 4mm maybe, should be able to take the weight if it is bolted into the supports in at least...

    PERFORATED STEEL PLATFORM

Thanks for the info. Mine is as much decorative as practical. although if I could get a cable tray 750mm (29.5 inches) lomg by 700mm (27.5 inches) wide it could work. But it needs the round perforated holes to allow light thro ( I said decorative). I really need to know the thickness of the...

    PERFORATED STEEL PLATFORM

I am building some stairs made with steel stringers and wood plank treads At the top there is a small platform before you step up to the landing. I want to use perforated steel instead of wood for that area. It is only 700 x 750mm with two steel supports each 150mm wide under them but it...

    Sand top of post level

Not that strange Foxhole. There is no way of knowing if I am holding the sander level is there, unless I can fix a level to it. I sometiimes use a small level on a drill to make sure I am drilling an exact perpendicular hole. I need to sand on the level as well to make sure I am not sanding...

    Sand top of post level

Sounds like a daft question but I have newel post with a slightly uneven top. Lower in one corner. Its resting on an uneven floor and I cannot afford to lose any height by attempting to saw it. Sanding on its own doesnt seem exact enough as who knows if the sander is level ? Obviously I am not...

    Widening holes in steel plate

Problem solved. Bought a 12mm HSCO drill bit which as directed used slowly did cut through the steel. Only problem was jambing and nearly taking my arm off a couple of times. But more practice and 20 more holes to go I will master it. I also found drilling a 12mm hole in the wood gave me more...

    Widening holes in steel plate

The company who made the stair stringers usually make fire escapes and these are a variation of them so I suspect they are stainless steel. The drill bit, although new does not cut even at the slowest speed but skids around the rim of the 10mm hole without cutting into it. I have tried it on a...

    Widening holes in steel plate

Just taken delivery of steel stringers for staircase. The 6mm thick plates have four holes each to take bolts to support 35 mm wood treads. The holes were drilled at 8mm instead of 12mm. I have had nothing but trouble from the company so want to drill the holes to 12mm myself. I have used a...

    Steel stringers gaps - Filler

Just had some steel stringers installed I am fitting the treads myself. Apart from drilling the wrong size holes and fitting the bolts at an angle when I came to paint it I discovered several gaps where they had not welded the tread support to the main stringer evenly. As I am using a lighter...

Not so much the stringers themselves but the installation They will be embedded in concrete under the floorboards at the base and bolted to wall at the top. Again I am relying on the guys doing the work rather than the p**** sitting in the office.

Most likely fold it up. It took me six weeks to get the drawings and another two weeks to get them to even put this in writing. So far I have also been waiting month for an installation date. Screwing wood plank to steel support

Screwing from under the tread through the support which as you say is welded to the stringer There are 8 screws for each tread, four each side I am using 8m 30mm coach screws for each 35mm tread. It seems as though that should be secure as the weigh of the hardwood itself should stop them...

    Screws or Bolts

Great replies. I keep saying the weight is from the top so bolts from the top are pointless as the screws are more to keep them in place rather than to take any weight which is taken by the steel supports. I have looked at coach bolts bit never looked for coach screws ( !) which combine the two...
