DIY cold tarmac or call the council?

A fair point. The council agreed to tarmac a bit of our drive and it's had huge lorries on it, jcbs, etc with no problems as they did it properly. Except the corner where it joins the road where they just laid tarmac on the ground. This was deeply rutted the first time something bigger than a...

DIY cold tarmac or call the council?

I think you can report the general state of the pavement to the council and see. If it's just knackered they might sort it out or at least get their crew to shovel proper tarmac in the hole. I can't support lying to the council, that's a terrible way to behave. But I don't know they can fine...

Neighbors in council house coverted loft

I get what @Leofric is saying though, there's a difference between doing something badly and not up to code, and not even doing it at all

Cat5 for power supply to MagLock

Perhaps 20m tops, definitely in the 15-20m range.

Hardly a surprise that! Shoddy new builds are the news quite a lot these days

Cat5 for power supply to MagLock

Normal cable is 1 or more isolated wires. Cat5 is a bunch of very thin, paired wires. And costs more. So what purpose does it serve to carry current to a simple switch over a regular old lighting cable or whatever? It's just a maglock. No gate actuators or anything like that.

Cat5 for power supply to MagLock

I see. It's running in a duct underground and he seems to know his stuff. I'm just curious why not use a normal cable?

Insulated stud wall on external wall - cannot seal the top

We've had built a stud wall using 3x2 inside a long external, solid wall in order to provide insulation. The stud is insulated with 75mm PIR and there is approx 2" air gap between the stud and the external wall. This is in a single-storey, wooden construction building with open roof, no...

Cat5 for power supply to MagLock

I have no idea what you just said. Please explain what that is why it matters?

Neighbors in council house coverted loft

Well that would depend if you do full plans or building notice surely, if they know what you're up to in detail. And you might invite them to do an initial inspection (ours offer this for free) when they would highlight anything they think is important. They can't say "NO" but they can say "we...

Neighbors in council house coverted loft

You see a lot of houses with unapproved loft conversions where the space is not advertised as a room and despite not doing it properly, it's been used for decades without problems. In the real world 6x2"s failing from people being up there seems very low-risk unless they decide to put a piano or...

Cat5 for power supply to MagLock

I was quite surprised that our electrician has laid what looked like a network cable to run 12V DC power to a MagLock we're going to install on our gate. I asked him and he's actually run 2XCat5 cables, citing distance/voltage drop as the reason for having two of them. I didn't want to distract...

    Ah that seems simple enough.

Sealing a toilet waste pipe through a wooden wall

We need to put a 110mm toilet waste through a 70mm solid wood wall. Normally I think you'd concrete this in (?) but not an option here. Plus it needs to look tidy and allow a little bit of flex. Is there some sort of standard collar or something that can go around the pipe and cover the hole...

Socket and light switch heights in commercial buildings

I was just double checking and 1200 is REALLY low for a light switch. Virtually waist height... I don't think I've ever been in a building like that and we've lived in modern new build houses. Perhaps I misunderstood that requirement or its only very recently changed?

Socket and light switch heights in commercial buildings

Fair question. Well firstly just aesthetically but more importantly we want to have light switches sockets etc out of reach of young kids. We will have a switch to unlock the main door like an intercom which must not be child accessible. We also want some sockets deliberately inaccessible for...

Socket and light switch heights in commercial buildings

if you recall from an earlier thread you'd know we had the building control officer out who signed off on our accessibility plan and said a strict reading of the regulations were inappropriate for our setting - but can we stay on topic? Do you or anyone know the answer to my question more...

Socket and light switch heights in commercial buildings

Our electrician mentioned in passing rules about this for our new childcare building but is away on holiday leaving us to decide what we want during where. I found this article but it mentions this aspect of part M in respect to dwelling space and non dwelling space only...

Surface mounted LED batten wired from conduit?

Cheers that's helpful. I don't know where our guy sources his stuff but if I can show him an example it can save a lot of confusion than trying to explain it. Thanks again.
