    Best wood for shelf

Looking to build a shelf that will sit inside a recess formed by a chimney breast and wonder what the best wood to use is? I had planned on building a ladder frame and adding a top and bottom. The width of the shelf is quite wide, approx 10ft It will be pained white a bit like the attached...

Blocking up a fireplace with wood?

I've recently removed a gas fire and ugly 80s surround... until we know whether to replace the fire or keep it blocked up I have temporarily covered the opening with a sheet of 9mm ply screwed into a couple of back bricks and stuck a plasterboard on top. Skimmed the edges and painted with...

No hot water - but boiler working.

Thanks, appreciate that. Yes I have no way of knowing if the original wifi fitting is correct or not. Given past experiences, I think possibly not!

No hot water - but boiler working.

The pipe running from the motorised valve doesn't get hot when the hot water & boiler are running - to be precise the pipe at the valve end does get hot but it's progressively colder as you go towards the tank. We've only ever run the hot water via a programmer, twice a day for X months and the...

No hot water - but boiler working.

Well, I am unsure how long this has been an issue because, and I'm embarrassed to say, we only just noticed hidden in the airing cupboard is an emersion switch that has been set to 'on' all this time (not lived here that long, but long enough I should have known this). So unbeknown to us, each...

No hot water - but boiler working.

OK - if I put hot water on (via my hive system) I can hear the 3 way valve engage, the boiler goes on, I feel resistance putting the 3 way into manual, but I get no hot water.

No hot water - but boiler working.

Hi Stem, I have no resistance in the switch when everything is off. I have no resistance in the switch when the heating is on. But I do have resistance in the switch when the water is on - it resists me putting it in manual mode and springs back up.

No hot water - but boiler working.

I am getting heating in my rads but no hot water - boiler fires fine and pipes get super hot, but not the one to the tank. Red lines = hot pipes. My 3 way valve has a lever that has no resistance when off - which suggests that's the fault? Happy to fit a new motor but wondered if it may be...

    No hot water?

Moved into a new house with a conventional boiler; gravity fed system. We have an immersion heater which works, but when this is off we are not getting any hot water. The tank thermostat is on 70. However the pipes are hot when the water is on, and the heating works fine so I assume this is not...

Why 2 tanks in my loft?

Both tanks are full up to about 6 inches from the top. The tank at the back (you can't see it in this photo) has a water feed going in (assume from the mains) and this has a hole & pipe at the top that fills the next tank. There is also a third smaller tank up there too (assume an overflow...

Why 2 tanks in my loft?

I went up to take a pic - I totally overestimated the size  they are 60x60x130cm - so by my calculations hold about 0.5 Tons of water each...

Why 2 tanks in my loft?

Water pressure is good, I'm in a town. 4 bed detached.

Why 2 tanks in my loft?

I have a new property which has 2 huge eater tanks in the loft - each approx 8ft wide by 4ft deep. I've never seen 2 big tanks, only 1 big and 1 small. I'd like to free up some space, is there any reason to have 2? Possibly water pressure related? (we are on a gravity system)

    How to weigh an anvil

No chance of hurting my back - it's impossible to lift even an inch of the floor. I'll probably stick it on ebay or facebook.

    How to weigh an anvil

I've got an anvil in my garden, it's too heavy to lift. I want to sell it but can't for the life of me figure out a good way to weight it?!

    Using Rotivator on Garden

I brought one off amazon last year for about £70 and used it myself - was about the same cost as renting but you have the option of selling it on. Not as powerful, but easier to use, no need for petrol and worked for me just fine on pretty dry ground. Just have to be a bit more patient perhaps...

    Can't get radiator off! Help?!

Trying to remove a rad for decorating - I've undone one side but this is not budging and I am fearful of breaking the pipe (it's already bent and dribbling out water despite me trying to hold it in place) I've already had to call a plumber for another room and had to pay £100 for him to take it...
