    New bathroom pipe run

I was thinking of connecting pan to the branch of a 110mm tee, running pipe along the floor and outside. Then, using below, connect 40mm pipe from bath to the tee...

    New bathroom pipe run

Hi I’m installing a new bathroom in a 4ft x 10ft space, with window and two existing outlets beneath it at one end. Outlet 1 was connected to a basin and is 18” above suspended timber floor, leads outside to a cast iron stack. Outlet 2 was connected to a bath and runs from above floor level...

    Capping cast iron soil stack

Sorry, yes photo is lying on its side! The knuckle with white plastic leads to the pan, black pipe runs vertically through the tenement. I’d love to angle grind but unlikely to get round the back. Flex seal cap looks an option - I’ll ask merchant what plugs they have.

    Fluctuating shower temperature, Potterton Gold

Hi just to post an update. My heating engineer fitted the flow switch and it did the trick. Shower seems to be working fine now.

    Capping cast iron soil stack

I was planning to box in the cast iron down pipe, so capping or cutting the current link to the WC as short as possible would be the ideal. cheers

    Capping cast iron soil stack

Hi I’m removing a WC for good, and need to cap the soil pipe. My question is, in the photograph you can see a brown (cast iron) collar that seems to connect plastic to the (cast iron) soil pipe. Do I cap with the collar left on, or if I need to remove it, how is this done? cheers Daljit

    Removing wall without using supports

That sounds a good approach to me. However it’s a ground floor tenement flat with considerable weight above which is I’m guessing why it seems so high spec. Beams will sit proud of the removed wall so will be a wider box on show. This will encroach cornice in one room I’m imagining, which might...

    Removing wall without using supports

Hi I have a building warrant and am now just starting to study the drawings submitted by my architect and structural engineer (SE). I plan to remove two walls of 2.5m and 1.5m; one is in the kitchen and the other in the bathroom. By removing the walls I will be making what are two compartments...

    Fluctuating shower temperature, Potterton Gold

Sorry, I should’ve said. It’s an eBay shop called boilerspares with 33,000 sales and a 99.8% positive approval rating. It only sells new parts. Besides, it may not fix the fault. It might be smthg to do with the plate exchange, as someone above suggested. And a plumber I spoke to y’day, who’s...

    Fluctuating shower temperature, Potterton Gold

From investigating further... i think the issue is with the DHW sensor, which i believe may also be known as a (magnetic) flow switch. It forms part of the hydraulic inlet assembly (about £100), which Baxi (i'm told) don't sell separately. However, found it on ebay for £15 so will see if that...

    Fluctuating shower temperature, Potterton Gold

Hi I have a Potterton Gold combi, about 15 yrs old, and a thermostatic shower. When the shower is run, the boiler doesn't always ignite or if it does, it cuts out after 30-45 secs. I don't have this issue if i run a bath. In fact, i notice that if the shower runs cold and i switch on the HW...

    Vaillant HW ok, no CH

Great, thank you. Link fitted, boiler working. Also now know what the fault is! Cheers

    Vaillant HW ok, no CH

IS it possible to bypass thermostat on this boiler? Just desperate for some heating in the flat! Thanks

    Vaillant HW ok, no CH

Danfoss TP5. The flat has just been re-wired. Possible that the hard wire to thermostat has been cut / damaged?! Unfortunately I don’t have anything to test if mains supply reaching the thermostat.

    Vaillant HW ok, no CH

Hi My Vaillant Turbomax Plus provides HW when tap turned on, but does not provide CH when external control demands. The status on display reads S.30 which is ‘no heating demand’ despite thermostat showing demand. The heating did come on for about 30mins, then switched itself off. I’ve heard...

    Insulating external wall

    Insulating external wall

Hi I'm renovating my bathroom and I'm interested in insulating two exteriors walls. The house was built 1920s and currently the walls are plaster & lath. The bathroom is on the first floor. The bathroom is quite small and I'd rather keep the loss of internal space to a minimum. I'm thinking...

    Thermostatic shower problem

Hi My thermostatic shower has stopped working. It produces a spray of water for about 10 secs then the flow reduces to a trickle after about 20 secs. When switched on, the boiler initially fires up but then cuts out when the flow slows down. HW taps to bath and basin work fine and there's...

    Potterton Gold losing pressure

Hi I removed expansion vessel, and drained it. Really dumb question, but is it possible to inflate a disconnected vessel? When I try air just escapes. Is this because it's disconnected, or should it still inflate to desired pressure. I read elsewhere that when you have a problem with a...

    Potterton Gold losing pressure

Hi Thanks for advice above- much appreciated. I disconnected PRV pipe and note that when CH switched on, pressure increases to 3.2 bar and then there's a steady discharge of mucky water. When the system cools down the pressure drops to below 0.5! I feel as if I'm making progress now...
