If the spades were so loose that they popped off the old element, use some pliers to gently squeeze them together so they grip the element terminals a bit tighter. They shouldn't just fall off. If you don't do this you could get problems with the connection overheating.

You may have neutrals at your switch positions, could you carefully unscrew a couple a post a photo here? If you need to get neutrals there, and you have a loop in system at the ceiling rose, it may be best to just pull a new 3 core plus earth cable in to the switch. This may or may not be easy...
