Decent carbon filters for solder fume extractor?

I've some large PC fans which I've chained together and plan on attaching some carbon filters to the back of to act as a diy solder fume extractor. Can anyone recommend an online shop/seller who sells the genuine article? There's lots available on eBay etc but I'd like to be sure that I'm...

Attaching a shelf via wooden door frame.

Tough to decide where to put this but since it concerns mainly wood I thought it best here. I need to attach a shelf over a doorway. I was originally going to attach 2 large brackets to the wall either side of the doorway, however due to a possible electric cable nearby I'd rather not chance...

Using a 1/4 router bit on a 50mm thickness piece of pine.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. Hmm I'll likely attempt the 2 pass method. Take off half, then use a top bearing cutter to remove the lower half.

Using a 1/4 router bit on a 50mm thickness piece of pine.

I need to straighten off the edges of a table top Im making from an old piece of oak parquet veneered pine. The oak veneer is about 5mm thick with the pine around 45mm, so 50mm all told. After I've straightened the edges I'll veneer them, so I need a nice clean edge. I have a Bosch 1200 router...

Thanks for that. I'll give it a try.

Varnish/Finish to use on an art drawing board?

I've chopped up a few plywood panels to create some art drawing boards. I've been trying to decide on a water proof sealant that will be suitable for such a task. The main requirement would be to give a reasonable flat clear finish and most importantly be tough and water resistant. Could...

Glue to bond plastic sunglasses frame

I haven't unfortunately. As has been advised, the plastics used for frames does seem to include oils which completely rule out bonding. That just seems to be the way it is, annoyingly. The best bet seems to be... don't break the frames!

Rourke gate lock won't budge. Ideas to free it?

Thanks for the replies everyone. I got it open! Some more liberal WD40 and some careful plier torque shifted it. There seems to be an issue with how it was installed. The locking bolt's recess hole on the wall is slightly out, resulting in a stiff movement in and out. Perhaps increasing the size...

Rourke gate lock won't budge. Ideas to free it?

My parents have a garden gate and the lock has become stuck. The key turns freely in it but it stops abruptly when engaging (I presume) the bolt. I've tried some liberal application of WD40 inside the key hole, on the key and on the bolt, what little of it I can see, but no joy. Does anyone...

A glue to bond ABS plastic that will also give a little

Thanks for all the replies everyone. Lots to consider then. I've looked into the bumper repair side and JB WELD PlasticWeld might do the trick. I'm not sure if the casing is ABS, I'm just presuming it is. The strimmer is just an old BD one, around 7 years I'd say. @Burnerman I hadn't considered...

A glue to bond ABS plastic that will also give a little

I have an old garden strimmer which works perfectly except for the fact that the head housing has cracked almost in half. It might be a goner but I'd like to see if I can make it useable again as the motor runs fine. Can anyone recommend a specific glue which would bond/weld the plastic...

Flatten bowed table top - Parquet veneer

As people have been pointing out, I think angle iron is the only way forward. Does anyone know where unequal sized angle iron can be purchased? Equal sized angle iron will substantially increase the table top thickness, so any saving I could make would be helpful. I've only seen unequal braces...

Glue to bond plastic sunglasses frame

This seems to be a bit of a holy grail! I thought I’d found a glue which would perform this function in Loctite’s All Plastics glue. However it failed after several attempts. What is it with spectacle plastics? Do they purposely male then out of some non stick plastic?? Can anyone recommend a...

Flatten bowed table top - Parquet veneer

That’s again for the replies everyone. I’d prefer to not use metal due to its weight and aesthetic. Would another material not work? Like mdf or some marquetry thinkness planks?

Flatten bowed table top - Parquet veneer

Thanks again for all the advice everyone. Going by what @JobAndKnock says, the parquet is only marquetry thickness as it is 5mm. The planking it's attached to seems an unusual choice to me, but there you go. Given this I would presume that attempting to bend the board back into shape is the...

Flatten bowed table top - Parquet veneer

Thanks for the reply, @Burnerman Of course, stupid of me to not realise that! Yes that will definitely be why the bow is there. How much effect would bonding some other timber have to it though now at this stage? Would it have a fairly immediate effect of cancelling out the bow or only...

Flatten bowed table top - Parquet veneer

I'd like to repurpose an old kitchen top as a table top. It was made by my girlfriend’s carpenter grandfather so has sentimental value. Unfortunately, it's bowed (convex) a little, which I'd like to have made flat. It seems to be constructed from a pine plank base and bonded with (I suspect) a...

How are set squares sizes measured?

Thanks for the reply. How do those measurements relate to 2" though? So for instance how am I to know how big a square called 6IN is?? A combination square is certainly more versatile, but I just need a good, very accurate set square. Combination squares are by their nature prone to small...

How are set squares sizes measured?

I'm looking to buy a smallish engineers set square but I'm not sure how their size vs their measurement works. They all get listed as 3IN Square and 7IN Square etc. What side is that pertaining to though? The long side, the short side or even a diagonal between the two!? I ask because when I...
