That’s the challenge. The “street” is a private dirt track shared by the houses. It was recently resurfaced and there were no covers found when scraping down. It could be buried by my garden wall I guess. Time to get out searching.

Yup, I'd agree with all of that. We aren't in a position to have it lifted and something more substantial put down, so I need to repair it as best I can and then, as you say, put a bit more effort into the maintenance of it.
