Layer of slate blow lintel - what is it for?

Thanks. Yes. I want to block up the vent because I don't like the icy blasts on cold winter mornings! I can open the window if I need to let some air in.

Layer of slate blow lintel - what is it for?

In an internal wall there is a layer of slate then a half height layer of bricks below a wooden lintel - what is the slate for? This is my upstairs toilet. There used to be a vent in the gap. I guess there is no problem just bricking up this whole, but do I need to replace the broken slate...

    Two layers of plasterboard

The stud walls in my house have two layers of plasterboard. I just ripped all the plasterboard off the walls in the toilet since it was damaged by removing tiles. I want to replace the board with two layers - how do I bind them together?

McCulloch Chainsaw - how to reassemble brake assembly

I took it apart as I suspected the brake was permanently engaged. I now can't work out how to insert the "handguard spring". Does anyone know? Thanks

Removing plaster from a brick wall

I have just removed some tiles from an upstairs toilet and the plaster behind the tiles is very powdery and crumbly in places. It looks like the best idea would be to completely remove the plaster and then reboard - does this sound right? If so, what is the best way to remove plaster from...

Removing wall tiles - SDS drill or what?

What's the best way to remove old ceramic tiles from a kitchen wall? I am thinking about buying one of these: http://www.screwfix.com/prods/55238/Power-Tools/SDS-Drills/Titan-SF25X2-2-6kg-SDS-Plus-Drill Do you think this is up to the job? What kind of damage will it do to the wall...

Asbestos garage - can I reclad it in wood?

Thanks, I have asked the council for information on disposal of the asbestos. I was just wondering if there are likely to be an problems cladding the frame in wood as I think overall it will be heavier and it doesn't have the same damp proof qualities as asbestos.

Asbestos garage - can I reclad it in wood?

My garage has a timber frame then asbestos panels on the outside. Is it possible to replace the asbestos (which is cracked in places) with ply and then clad the whole thing in wood (either shiplap or cheap t&g floorboards)?

    Combi or What?

Are you saying using 22mm is bad? Doesn't it depend on how far the pipe has to go? M

    Combi or What?

I installed a Worcester Bosch greenstar 40 CDI combi about four years ago. This was the biggest "cheap" combi around at the time and it runs on a standard gas meter. I have had no problems with it until recently but I expect that the diverter valve started malfunctioning about four weeks ago...

    Genuine Mixer Taps

Due to an old and constantly dripping tap I purchased a Stockholm single lever tap from B&Q yesterday. http://tinyurl.com/dk3l2r It looks nice but it's disappointing because the hot water comes out of a small hole in the centre of the outlet but the cold comes from the outside of the outlet...

    low cold pressure

I have seen this happen before. When old style taps are replaced in gravity fed bathrooms, the flow does sometimes drop to almost nothing. I'm not sure there is much you can do except change to mains fed taps (and one of combi/unvented cylinder/thermal store for hot). Remedial action might be...

    Gas pipe in stud wall

There's not much difference in terms of difficulty. I have to re-plasterboard and re-tile the bathroom side of the wall (it's badly damaged), so I may as well put pipes in there at the same time (water and central heating pipes are going in too)

    Gas pipe in stud wall

I would like to run a 28mm gas pipe from the meter under the stairs up through the stud wall at the end of the bathroom and into the loft to fuel the boiler. (bathroom is at the top of the stairs). Is this possible and what are the regulations? Note: I am going to get a CORGI to do this, but...

Is it possible to run a combi boiler for heating only while we are away on holiday with the cold water supply to the combi turned off (at the main stopcock for the house)? Thanks M
