    Cutting down a palm tree

I do get it thank you. You may think it looks good but you don't have to live with it growing at that angle over your small garden. Thank you for the help.

    Cutting down a palm tree

Thanks for the responses. Does that mean there's nothing I can put on the stump to stop it growing that wont kill the rest of the tree? I would quite like to keep the upright bits!!

    Cutting down a palm tree

It's been a while since I've been on this forum but we've moved into a new place so I'll be posting up quite a bit in the coming months as the place is a fixer-upper. The first thing I want to do is to tidy up the garden - we've made some headway but I want to chop down a palm tree that is...

    Immersion heater failure

Well the best part of three years have passed since I did this job and today we woke to cold water. :( The good news is that it's just the reset swtich on the thermostat that popped out and we now have hot water. Is this the start of something going wrong? The element has been faultless...

Check Valve and Overflow Pipe Questions

Thanks. One pipe disappears into the concrete floor, the other into the cavity between the ceiling and the floor in the loft (access is very tight). If it came to it I could replace the white pipe (which I think is 21.5mm that I've seen in the shops before) but I've not seen the smaller grey...

Check Valve and Overflow Pipe Questions

Hi there - it's been a while since I've been on here! I've just got home after been called out to an "emergency" at the flat we rent out. Our tenant noticed water flooding out of the overflow and also leaking inside the airing cupboard. After a bit of faffing around I have identified two...

Hot water - timed or on constant - what's more efficient?

We've moved into a flat where there is a communal boiler which routes hot water to radiators and through a mains pressured hot water tank (indirect of course). Energy is metered and charged at the same price regardless of when it is used. In the past I've always had a timer on the hot water to...

    Strange three pin plug socket

I'm hoping someone will be able to help me out here - in our communal areas in our block of flats we have three pin plug sockets that are slightly different to normal. The hole for the earth pin is smaller than normal and doesn't accept a standard plug. Does anyone recognise these? Any...

Help choosing a material for bookshelves

Hi - I'm back agian to tap the knowledge of this great forum. I've moved into a new place and need a couple of lowish bookshelves to put my TV and hifi on. I can't see anything in the shops that is suitable so I have decided to make my own. I'm going for a simple rectangular frame with a...

Faulty Hotpoint WT965 - where to start?

Success! Thanks for all your help guys - it is much appriciated. I was trying to feed the belt over the pulley starting on the non-drawer side. When I tried starting the other side it went on OK - probably because the drawer side has much more restrictred access.

Faulty Hotpoint WT965 - where to start?

OK - i found the lower rear acces panel! The belt doesn't seem long neough to be able to stretch it back over by hand (the belt is in good condition so looks like it can be re-used). The motor is held on by three bolts - I was thinking of undoing two in order to get the belt back...

Faulty Hotpoint WT965 - where to start?

Good call dude! I've just taken the top off and felt down the back - there is no belt on the large smooth pulley behind the drum. There's not much access from the top and the back seems to be attached to the sides - how the hell do I get the back off?!

Faulty Hotpoint WT965 - where to start?

Hi, Yesterday our wahsing machine decided to start playing up. At lunchtime we washed our bed linen with no problems at all. Later in the day my girlfriend decided to put a towel wash on. When the machine finished she opened it and it had not washed the towels. I wasn't paying much...

Adding a FCU spur to ring main for a heater

Hi - It's been a while since I've posted on here but I need someone to sanity check what I'm about to do! I have a 1kw panel heater in the main bedroom that was fitted in place of a storage heater (we have Economy 7). It has an FCU connected to the switched (cheap) supply so the heater...
