    Mortar mix/recipe for internal wall?

So far as I know, struck is meant more for outside, so the rain drains off. I think recessed is not all that suitable for old bricks, so it's down to bucket handle or flush. I expect the former, but I'll try a little section flush to see. Thanks for the recipe :)

    Mortar mix/recipe for internal wall?

:D I'm guessing from your last comment you don't really approve :) Question is, then, what's the least crumbly mortar mix...

    Options for no skirting/baseboard?

Hmm, interesting. I should add the the whole 11 metres of the internal party wall will be exposed brick. It's the end walls, and outside walls I was wondering about. I was worried it would just look odd having skirting on the rendered walls, and suddenly nothing on the exposed wall...

Flat finish for doubling up as projector screen

Thanks guys I should perhaps expand - I've had a 50" plasma since 2006, when it cost a small fortune. It's a 720p model, and it's still going strong. Would probably be a 5th of the price now, ho hum. However, now I'm refurbishing my place, I've decided that mostly I watch movies and...

Flat finish for doubling up as projector screen

Planning on replastering my chimney breast, which will be painted with a white paint specifically designed to use for a projector. Currently we've chipped off the plaster down to the brick. The essential thing is that it's as flat as possible. So what would be the best method? Would simply...

It's been asked before, but cutting a new loft hatch...

... just want to be sure, because a structural surveyor suggested something different (it was an incidental question, he came to check if a wall was supporting). I have an old-style non-trussed roof (with only about 4 diagonal roof supports across the whole 12m), so 90% of the joists only...

    Mortar mix/recipe for internal wall?

I read that, particularly with old brick/brickwork, it's bad to use mortar that was stronger than the old stuff, as it can eventually cause the face of the brick to crack off. Question is, what would be a good mortar mix for repointing an internal exposed brick wall? Both strength and colour...

Can anyone recommend a drill bit for removing mortar?

I don't really want to buy/hire an angle grinder if I can avoid it. Plus I think it would be a bit harsh on the brick, which is on an internal wall we're hoping to leave exposed. My drill obviously has SDS/hammer capability, so wonder if anyone can recommend a bit type/range?

Is a 2.7 metre glass balustrade in one piece possible?

I have removed a wall between a room and back staircase, and now need a balustrade. For maximum light to the narrow staircase I want a glass balustrade. Anyone know if 2.7m is possible with one length of glass, and if so what thickness? I suppose if not, 2 x 1.35m should be possible. Also...

    Options for no skirting/baseboard?

Hi there I'll be having an outside wall replastered, and will be laying a new wooden floor on top of the old one. Just wondering what the options are for having no skirting? Is it possible to get a tidy edge between plaster and new floorboard?

Floor edge finishing for landings and stairs

Thanks - thought there's be a name for it!

Floor edge finishing for landings and stairs

I've knocked down a wall next to a stairwell, and will be putting in a glass balustrade. I will be laying a new wooden floor over the existing floor, so without any kind of edge finishing, you're going to see a cross section of the board ends when you're standing on the stairs. What're...

    Open plan kitchen/diner/living room

Thanks for the input. The fireplace is currently blocked up, and we didn't plan to open it up, as it would be very close to the table. Only trouble with swapping kitchen/dining area is that the windows are only 70cm of the floor, and I don't like it when units cut off windows. That would...

    Open plan kitchen/diner/living room

Hi I live in an upper floor (purpose built) maisonette. In the back half of the property we originally had a bedroom at the back, separated from stairs down to garden, then the kitchen, then the dining room. We took down the wall between kitchen and dining room, and were thinking of...

Reducing chimney breast - is it possible?

I've taken down my lathe and plaster ceilings (top floor), and can see 2x4 joists at 30cm centres, spanning 3.8 metres from party brick wall to outer brick wall. All but two of these joists rest on a wall plate, tied in to the wall by steel brackets. The remaining two rest on the chimney...

Sound proofing - 'sand plugging' vs acoustic mineral wool?

Thanks for info - was this 'plaster mix' of similar density to sand? Do you think my weight calcs are ok?

Sound proofing - 'sand plugging' vs acoustic mineral wool?

It's a huge open plan room - 11m x 4m = 44 m^2 The floor joists are each 10cm x 18cm, and 30 cm centres, one end supported by internal party wall, the other by external outer wall. EDIT - Actually, thinking about it, I think the weight should be fine. Say I have 5cm of sand spread...

Sound proofing - 'sand plugging' vs acoustic mineral wool?

I live in an upper floor maisonette, and while refurbing, this is a great time to install sound proofing. I was all set to go for acoustic mineral wool + acoustic plaster board in between the joists, but just recently saw something called 'sand plugging' mentioned in Collins DIY manual. My...
