Is running a 1.5mm twin and earth cable for a light switch on the other side of a wall within a safe zone? For example.... running the cable down the wall in one room and then drilling through the wall to a light switch in line with the cable drop on the other side of the wall? Thanks for your...

    Fixing back boxes to blocks

Having taken plasterboard off a few walls I’ve got some 25mm back boxes that need re attaching to the block walls and the cables tacking down before the plastered dot and dab new boards to the walls and skim. With them being aerated blocks they are a nightmare to plug and screw and worse to...

    Guttering fittings leaking

New rubbers arrived this week. Just fitted them and tested with a hosepipe. Every single one leaks!! How come? Am I missing something? Nothing is notched and everything looks fine.

    Guttering fittings leaking

Ahhh good advice! Thanks. Fortunately I can confirm that the guttering has been cut the right length. Floplast have a like on the inside and the writing “cut guttering to here”. So that’s cool! Also... they’ve not been notched. Like you said... notching them would mean that the clips wouldn’t...

Thanks. I managed to find them. I’ve ordered plenty. Hopefully it’ll sort it. I guess if left undisturbed they should last for years?

    Guttering fittings leaking

I’m getting fed up with the fittings on my guttering leaking and dripping for an hour or so after there’s been rainfall. My guess is that the rubber seals are worn (after 8 years?!?!) and therefore letting the water through. I’ve taken them out, cleaned then and refitted them. It’s slightly...

    Moving a toilet slightly

Straight down into the concrete floor I’m afraid so it won’t move. I wondered if there was a connector or offset that would do the trick.

    Moving a toilet slightly

Hi, I’d like to position this toilet to be in the center of the window prior to the boarding and plastering while I have the opportunity. Moving the mains water is no problem but I wondered what I could do to move the waste. It needs to move to the right 135mm to be central to the window. The...

    Replace staircase

Thanks. Perhaps I need to clarify... The £180 I was mentioning was a complete new staircase in MDF. I phoned my local timber merchant and they said they had three sizes on stock that the get from a local joiner. The one that best suits mine is... 2574 total rise 2676 total run/going I assume...

    Replace staircase

Thanks that makes sense. So if the current staircase is removed (treads and risers) I may as well remove the newel post too - as the new case will actually finish slightly small on the overall run/going. Is it the possible to add a new newel to the new staircase once it’s in position?
