    Matching mortar colour

Thanks. I was hoping to get some ready mix mortar but happy to make some up. At least I have that. Will apply some before filling with mortar.

    Matching mortar colour

There’s a small chunk of mortar missing from the brick work. I’d like to replace it. Which product will match the colour closest?

    Am I crazy to wetsand?

Wow. I thought all Wooster brushes were good. I’ll chuck the silvertip ones and replace them. I’ve ordered floetrol through their website. I’ll rub down the first coat with some high grit sandpaper in preparation.

    Am I crazy to wetsand?

Window boards have had acrylic primer undercoat. I’m using Dulux Quick Drying water based Satinwood for next two coats. Despite using a wooster silvertip brush, there are brush marks in the first coat. Having done a bit of wetsanding on car paint years ago, I’m tempted to do the same. Sane or...

    Filling a large hole

I removed a wall-mounted lamp from the porch. The remaining hole for the wire goes through to the other side (into the garage). What can I do to make a presentable finish before painting?

    Cleaning wood before painting

Thanks. I ended up using a microfibre to clean as much as possible and then painted a couple of coats of acrylic primer undercoat. Looks good so far. I did use ronseal 2-part wood filler. Hope it works okay.

    Cleaning wood before painting

I’ve sanded down the window boards (ended up using a hot air gun and scraper, then sanded over). Need to fill some cracks and gaps. Will sand after that too. What should I use to clean the wood from dust after vacuuming? American sites talk about mineral spirits but in the UK we have white...

    Repainting window boards

Not MDF. In addition, the wood is cupping/cupped - I didn’t notice until I got out my multitool to sand the edges. The wood dips in the middle. I’m struggling to sand. 3 sessions of 20 minutes of sanding and I haven’t done half the window board. Either the sand paper is rubbish, my tools are...

    Repainting window boards

Now we’ve had new double glazing installed, the existing window boards look naff. I’ve started sanding down using 80/120 grit. There’s at least five different coloured layers before I reach bare wood. There are “hot spots” where the I’m down to bare wood and surrounding areas still have the...

    Washing machine woes

Got some building work coming up. Dishwasher relegated to garage for storage. Washing machine went into its place. At least that was the plan. Inlet seemed long enough but drain outlet was too short and on the “wrong” side of the machine. Googled washing machine drain extension. Got a hit off...

    Growing Vegetables

What are you planning to grow? I grew veg for a few years. I used raised beds make from scaffold boards and filled with compost. Clay soil can compact down too much. You need to dig up around 1-2 feet of soil. Certain crops need the soil to be free of stones etc so carrots for example will fork...

Adding trellis to low concrete posts

We have but it’s quite small - the width of the middle bit of the fence post. I was considering buying a wooden fence post, cutting it up and slotting it between the trellis panels and then buying a composite cover for the fence post. But to be honest it looks fine as it is. Especially as the...

Adding trellis to low concrete posts

Okay so I had to do something similar although our fence panels and posts were only 5 foot high. If your fence posts are new or the U channel is square, you could use these: https://www.woodsideproducts.co.uk/98357-woodside-fence-trellis-extension-arms-topper-brackets-pack-of-10.html They...

Thank you J&K. I have access to both of those so will give it a go and report back.

    Refinish a dining table

Thanks J&K. I found this http://www.cloverchem.co.uk/2013/sds/en/712_inkov_sds.pdf Which states the main ingredient is 3-Methoxy-3-methyl-1-butanol. Googling that tells me it’s an alcohol based solvent and that’s the limit of my Google-fu. I still have loads of the product left so I guess I...

    Refinish a dining table

So clearing out the garage last night and I found some ink stain remover to remove the stains as per this thread: https://www.diynot.com/diy/threads/refinishing-a-table-top.524049 It worked remarkably well but alas it has damaged or impaired the surface which is now sticky. In addition I left...

    Trimming fence panels in situ

Sadly all of the panels are tightly jammed in. I was thinking a multitool blade cut trim so far in maybe 20mm. But I don’t know what I could use beyond that distance.

Yes. The rain has just made them bow out.

    Trimming fence panels in situ

Waney edge fence panels have been jammed into concrete posts. No movement. No give. I need to install some brackets for a trellis. Normally these would slide down between fence and concrete post but there’s no gap. I can’t remove the fence panels without risk of damaging them (and having to...
