    Refinishing a table top

Oak table with veneer. We've had it a few years but recently it suffered some damage to the surface (ink transfer from printed paper). Furniture insurance won't cover ink damage. It really needs sanding down and refinishing but I don't know who to turn to. Any recommendations for West...

Cutting 5mm squared/circular hole into wardrobe backboard

Can you get some solid timber behind the backboard? Probably achievable if you can slip it in from the top. Otherwise what about making a larger hole and then using a rubber grommet to line the hole and hide the tearout?

How to store/hang large garden power tools?

I store my gardening stuff in the garden shed. Wooden structure so I screwed in a piece of 1x3 timber that I'd varnished beforehand. I used these hooks: https://www.diy.com/departments/rothley-black-steel-tubular-hook/277313_BQ.prd for things like strimmer, hedge trimmer etc. I used these ones...

Beko ASD241B American fridge freezer water collecting

model: ASD241B We've had this fridge-freezer for four years. Recently over the last few months, there's been water collecting under the salad trays. It needs mopping up every few weeks. I can't spot an obvious drain hole that needs cleaning. Any ideas?

Recirculating extractor hood over gas hob - permitted?

Sounds like a valid reason for not fitting them at all.

Recirculating extractor hood over gas hob - permitted?

No idea about modern regs. The previous owners did an extension and fitted a new kitchen about 10 yrs ago. The "extractor" is a recirculation model. The door opens upwards and locks into position. The extractor is sandwiched between two fullsized cupboards. I change the carbon filter every six...

    Makita SDS suggestions

That's the one I've been eyeing. I didn't know if there were better options.

    Makita SDS suggestions

I'm fed up of not being able to drill into concrete lintels and concrete blocks. I tried drilling into a lintel last month. This month I'm trying to drill through concrete blocks to install a 2-gang socket to replace the single socket. My DHP480 and multiconstruction bits aren't managing to...

    Boarded loft. What insulation??

I'm only a DIYer so I could be talking out of my harris. The aim is to minimise heat loss from the house. If you insulate the roof, it shouldn't be any different than insulating the floor of a loft in a three storey house. If you really wanted to keep heat loss down, it might be beneficial to...

    Boarded loft. What insulation??

What about a warm roof instead? You could insulate the rafters and just board over the joists. It means the loft will be warmer too.

    Stiff tape measure

I ended up going for the dual imperial and metric version of this. Amazon had it in stock. Screwfix didn't.

    Drilling through chipboard

It was a bit difficult as it was the dresser and there was a shelf in the way so I couldn't drill from underneath. Even with a 90 degree angle drill extension. Given the diameter I need this time around is much smaller (about 6-8mm), am I okay to just use a wood drill bit? I was going to use...

    Drilling through chipboard

With our old fitted wardrobe, I drilled a hole in the corner of the dresser to pass some wires for a TV (power, co-ax and ethernet). I used a spade bit and probably slightly too much pressure so the hole wasn't a clean cut all the way through. This time around, we have a new fitted wardrobe...

    Stiff tape measure

I have a Stanley 5m leverlock tape measure. I love the leverlock function (tape stays put when pulled out) but it flops around if extended more than 1m. I don't know if it needs to be wider or stiffer. Can anyone recommend a tape measure that doesn't flop around uselessly when up ladders trying...

    Curtain batten frustration

Normally that's what I do. For every fixing. Brown wall plugs. 7mm drill bit. Deep enough so the whole wall plug is within the brick work. But I kept hitting what I presume was the lintel (even at six inches above and to the side of the window). No idea if it was concrete or steel but HSS or...

    Curtain batten frustration

Well I ended up using Sticks like s**t adhesive and screwed the batten using 7 rawlplugs (two were either side of the central one and felt flimsy). Curtain pole up. Heavy curtains up. Fingers crossed it all stays up.

    Curtain batten frustration

Thanks. Before I saw your reply, I decided to cut off the wallpaper behind where the batten was and consider using a grab adhesive. Look at what I found underneath: (Excuse the crappy panoramic photo off my iphone) You can see my vertical holes at either end but in between are 9 rawlplugs...

    Curtain batten frustration

The last curtain pole and batten fell down when the windows had been wide open and it had ripped from the wall during stormy weather. They’d been up for the four years we’ve been here and who knows how long before that. This week, I decided to put up a new batten and curtain rail. The window...

Nilfisk 140.3 pressure washer fix (likely similar for other makes and models)

I have the same model and had an issue with it only working intermittently. Turns out it doesn’t like hozelock autostop connectors.

    Small shop vacuum

It’s an option but limits my ability to work in the garage when it’s raining outside. Cost not a massive issue but don’t want to spend £750 on a festool ctm 26. The garage/workshop is too small for lots of tools so things like a plane thicknesser will be out of the question. All I see it being...
