    Downlights burning plasterboard

Not sure what type of reflector they are as I've thrown the boxes out now. Yes they are in an enclosed space so that might be the problem I suppose. They're being used to highlight a wall feature, and as such there isn't much room above/around the light for heat to escape. So I have to...

    Downlights burning plasterboard

Hi there, I've installed some Low Voltage downlighters in my ceiling, using MR8 35w bulbs. The fittings themselves are a satin nickel finish, and after you've had them running for about 30 secs you cant touch the fitting becuase it's so hot. I assume that its normal for them to run this...

    Door linings - installation

when fitting a new internal door lining, should I use normal rawplugs and large screws to fix, or proper frame fixings - i.e. the ones that normally come with the grey sleeve? Thanks in advance

    New Door Lining

ok cheers guys. Isn't that sometimes a problem when you're only securing to a single skin internal wall and you only have the width of one brick to secure 2 quite chunky frame fixings too? I just forsee each side of the brick coming away when I drill into it...

    New Door Lining

Hi there, I need to install a new door lining to a masonary wall as the old lining is past it. The original lining has been nailed into the masonary using what looks like floorboard nails. I'm planning to use frame fixings to fix the new one. But how many fixings should be used per jamb...

Can I use 1 transformer for multiple lights?

Can anyone tell me whether these transformers are Leading edge or trailing edge? Doesn't say anywhere on their literature? I want to use a Futronix dimmer but it uses leading edge - so I'm assuming the transformers need to be leading edge too in order to work and avoid buzzing. Thanks again

Can I use 1 transformer for multiple lights?

All the dimmer switches I've looked at rate them in watts though? Do I need to do some conversions to figure this out then? eg 10 transformers, 50VA each. How would I convert 500VA into a wattage rating that I can use when buying the dimmer switch? IS it easiest to just take the maximum...

Can I use 1 transformer for multiple lights?

Can you guys tell me if these transformers will draw the maximum rating all the time? This wording in the instructions has confused me: "To calculate the toal load for dimming, add the wattages of all the transformers you are intending to dim and choose a dimmer with a rating to suit."...

Can I use 1 transformer for multiple lights?

Thanks guys. Mikhail when you mention LED alternatives, other than the bulb itself, is there anything else that needs to be changed should I want to use LED instead? I'm assuming LED lights are Low Voltage too...? I initially discounted LED's becuase form what I've seen of them they are...

Can I use 1 transformer for multiple lights?

thanks for the replies guys, but I think i'm more confused than before. To be honest I'd prefer to use mains voltage, but the section where I'm placing these lights is a feature point and they need to be very small - hence an mr8 20w bulb. From what I can tell, these are only available in LV...

    Plasterborading a wall

Thanks Richard. I didn't think you'd have to fill the joins if they're tightly butted together and you're having the whole lot skimmed...? Although I mistakenly bought taper-edge boards and will have to trim 3" from both sides to remove the taper. I expect that i wont be able to get these...

Can I use 1 transformer for multiple lights?

Hi there, I'm planning on mounting 8 20w Low Voltage lights in my ceiling, with the first light being approx 3-4 metres away from the last light. Can I simply buy a single transformer - eg one thats rated at 160w - and use this to feed the first light and then daisy chain the remaining 7 ...

    Plasterborading a wall

Hi there, I'm about to plasterboard (dot-n-dab) a large wall section. Should the boards butt tightly together or should a small gap be left between them? I've had mixed answeres on this before and would like to get a definitive answer from a professional plasterer. Also, I'm dot-n-dabbing...

Should I add inhibitor or flushing chemical first?

About 6 months ago I replaced all the microbore pipework in my house with 22/15mm and changed all the radiators and valves too. Since then, every other month or so I've been draining the system down, adding a new rad in a newly decorated room and then refilling. Becuase I've been frequently...

Potterton Kingfisher mf - overflowing into expansion tank

I haven't touched the sensor yet, it was just the first thing I'm planning to change. I should say that 2 weeks ago I upgraded from a single panel radiator in our living room to a double panel type. Cant see that this is connected in any way but thought I'd mention it...! Can I get the...

Potterton Kingfisher mf - overflowing into expansion tank

I will try and take a picture when I get home. Thinking about it, sludge in the pipes wouldn't explain why the temperature control on the boiler failed to turn off the boiler when I turned it all the way down before actually turning it off..? Would it?

Potterton Kingfisher mf - overflowing into expansion tank

I've had to drain it down many times in the last year or so due to decorating, upgrading rads/pipework etc. Doesn't seem to have any problems when draining - i.e water retention that might be caused by sludge. Admittedly the water is light brown when drained but I'm assuming this is normal...

Potterton Kingfisher mf - overflowing into expansion tank

Hi there, On the weekend I noticed that there was water coming out of the expansion overflow pipe in the loft. The boiler was dumping hot water out of the expansion pipe into the tank. Turned the temperature control down on the boiler and it didn't happen again all weekend. Then this...

    Plasterboarding Window Reveals

I'm about to dot-n-dab my window reveals and will apply a skim coat of plaster afterwards. Should I butt the plasterboard edges directly up to the window frame, or should you leave a gap of around say 3mm to allow the skim coat to fill the gap afterwards? And in general, when dot-n-dabbing...

    PVA - tacky or dry?

I've removed all the plaster from my living room walls exposing the brickwork underneath. I'm planning to dot'n'dab the walls, but I've read different things about how you should PVA the walls. Should I PVA the walls and let the PVA throughly dry before boarding, or should I wait until its...
