    Shiplap edges

My query concerns the finishing off and weatherproofing of shiplap ends. I've seen two constructions and only hope I can describe them usefully :- (1) A vertical flat beading fitted flush to and abutting the ends along its length. This seems to be the most popular. (2) A vertical 'L' shaped...

Ford Fiesta - what sort of carburettor ?

The car is a 1993 Fiesta 1.1 LX. It has an HCS engine - the engine type on the VIN is G6. I need to strip/clean/refurbish the carb and for this I will need an appropriate gasket kit. First I need to know what sort of carb I've got . According to my Haynes manual I ought to have a Weber TLDM...

    battery problem

I presume it was once OK and then something happened to drain the battery and lead you to fit a new battery. Whatever it was that was draining the battery appears to be still doing so. So, what electrical thing was fitted/adjusted/renewed just before you had the problem ? Check it out. I...

Ford Fiesta 1.1 1993 Carb Starting Problems

It sounds like you've got the 1.1 fuel injection model (engine type CFI - engine code G6A). Fuse No:20 relates to the HEGO (Heated Exhaust Gas Oxygen) sensor. This sensor fits into the exhaust train and sends info, regarding the levels of oxygen in the exhaust, back to the engine management...

    Fiesta fuel filler cap

Well, in my case WD40 didn't help - the filler cap was well and truly siezed up. Rather than get at it with a jemmy I took it to my local fraud dealer who charged £58 for a new lock, labour and VAT. So the moral of the story is if your filler cap starts to get stiff, immediately clean it with...

    Fiesta fuel filler cap

It's a 1993 1.1 Fiesta. The fuel filler cap, which is ignition key operated, has progressively got more and more difficult to remove. By which I mean the key has got stiffer to turn in it. Now it won't turn at all. I don't want to be too heavy handed but can anyone advise the best course of...

    fiesta thermostat

Yes it could be the thermostat but approach it this way:- First check the fan cuts in: open the bonnet, start the car and use the accelerator to put it on fast idle (i.e. not racing), once the engine warms up the fan should cut in. This should be before the temp gauge gets high. If the fan is...

    Plasterboard - which side ?

I have to break into my roof-space to remove a wasps nest. I shall make good the hole with dry-wall/plasterboard and then plaster/artex over. Is there a correct side of the plasterboard to receive the plaster or doesn't it matter ? Thanks

    poor spark, nissan bluebird

Check all cables properly fitted/seated. Possibly distributor cap dirty/corroded inside - check and clean. Similarly the rotor arm. Worst case the distributor cap is cracked get a new one (and rotor arm whilst you are about it) at Halfrauds.

    petrol smell but no leak??

But this time don't fill it right to the top and then see if you get petrol smells.

    petrol smell but no leak??

Had you just filled up and/or is your fuel filler overflow pipe blocked? Has this happened before ? was there a steady increase in fuel smells? You mentioned that while driving the smells returned, did you stop at that time and check ? Because if there was e.g. a leak from your carb any...

Citroen Xsara tailgate brake lights dont !

The brake lights (on the wings) work OK. The 'eyeline' brake lights along the top of the tailgate don't work. BUT when I take the assembly out, (1) The interior lights go off and (2) each 'brake' bulb works OK. Now, the rear wiper, which is on the tailgate works OK and I assume from this that if...

    Oak Beams

Can anyone recommend a reliable source for oak beams in the Warwickshire/Worcestershire area ? Need a gable end renewing in a barn. The present main beam is 17ft long x 9" x 9". And what about a crane or other means of lifting in place (about 25ft up). All advice gratefully received.

    Renew external cladding

My upper back wall is cladded with T & G fitted vertically. This has warped and now needs to be replaced. I wish to replace it with Shiplap running horizontally. Currently, working from the inside out, I have plaster-board, studding, T&G. A friend says, when I've done the replacement, I should...

    Oil Leak / Burning Oil

If the engine is burning oil then the level on the dipstick will be down at fairly frequent intervals. Is it ? How often do you have to top it up and by how much ? This is the test. Also, sometimes there's a noticable puff of grey smoke from the exhaust, is there such smoke ? Regards

    Steering joggs on acceleration

Don't know about the steering issue, but grey smoke implies oil being combusted. If so check how much oil you are using. The worst case could be worn piston rings.

    one year off the road

here's what I would do..... 1) Take off handbrake and push the car out of the garage (this will test that the brakes are not stuck). 2) Check tyres - they could have 'flats' where they've been standing and may have become deformed (see 9 below). 3) Check oil, coolant, brake fluid and...
