My upper back wall is cladded with T & G fitted vertically. This has warped and now needs to be replaced. I wish to replace it with Shiplap running horizontally. Currently, working from the inside out, I have plaster-board, studding, T&G. A friend says, when I've done the replacement, I should have plaster-board, studding, insulation between studding, membrane and finally Shiplap.
I'm a bit of a novice so can someone please advise:-
1) is the suggested sequence correct ?
2) what sort of insulation ?
3) what's a membrane and where do I get one ?

Thanks

Hi,

Your friend is correct.

From the inside out you will have 12.5mm plasterboard.
Timber studs, usually 4 inch x 2inch
Insulation
Membrane
T&G Boards

The insulation that I would suggest is called ISOWOOL. Places like Jewson sell it. You can buy it in rolls or batts and it comes in various thicknesses. I would recommend using batts (like slabs) as they are easier to handle. They can be trimmed to size using a straight edge and a Stanley knife. Make sure that you leave no gaps between the studs and the insulation as it will form cold spots. Also make sure that you measure the depth of the timber studs and get the correct thickness of insulation ie; 3 inches or 4 inches thick.

The membrane is also known in the building trade as a DPM (Damp Proof Membrane). It stops any moisture or damp from penetrating through into the timber studs and plasterboard. It is sold in two thicknesses on a roll. The thicker type is used in insulated concrete floors so you therefore require the thinner type. It is simply fixed to the exterior of the studs by using a staple gun. I would recommend starting off at one end with the DPM and overlapping the next sheet by a stud spacings width ie; 400mm.
To be extra sure I usually tape the overlap to further reduce the ingress of damp. Again, places like Jewson or Wickes sell this product.

Good luck with your project and feel free to post for more help should you require any. :D
