    Roof Felt Ripping Easily

So I better lay off the spinach and heat it up when bending around corners. I suppose the last time I layed roofing felt was on a roasting toasting day, and I had no problems then. Cheers

    Roof Felt Ripping Easily

Hi, I'm just laying some green felt on a shed roof (better quality than shed felt), but without any underlay. The stuff I have seems to rip and crack extremely easily, is this because it's crap stuff, or just me. Cheers

    Loft Conversion Means of Escape

I would ideally like to keep my existing doors due to their character, rather than fit white panelled fire doors, or expensive oak ones. My main arguement is that it is surely better safety wise to have mains interlinked fire alarms in every habital room to provide early warning, rather than a...

    Loft Conversion Means of Escape

Thanks for reply Woody. Is there any instance when the escape window would still be deemed as a means of escape and the 1.7m distance would have to be met, i.e if for any reason you couldn't fully comply with the protected means of escape, like in a listed building when the original doors had to...

    Loft Conversion Means of Escape

Hi, I'm just checking on the minimum distance that a roof window has to be from the edge of the roof. Can anyone confirm as to whether the 1.7m maximum distance is still a requirement or not as I get the inpression that this was removed from the building reg revision in 2007? Cheers

    100mm Joist Hanger Packing

Hi, I'm just fitting a doubled up 2" joist into a 100mm hanger. There is about a 10mm gap between side of joist and side edge of hanger, is it OK to just pack this out with a 10mm bit of wood? Cheers

    Joist Hanger Fitting

Thanks for the reply Noseall. The type I am using are the long leg jiffy/speedy type. If you don't notch and just wrap over I assume that it will cause problems when laying the floor on top.

    Joist Hanger Fitting

Hi, fitting long leg joist hangers to a 8x2 doubled up joist. Do I notch the joist so the hanger wrap over sits flush with the top? I've read you do, but I've also read that your shouldn't notch double joists - you either know or you don't! Cheers for any help.

    Old Meter and Fuses

Mine was last looked at (possibly fitted) in 1992. British Gas told me it had to be changed every 10 years, but Scottish Power who did it said every 25 years. The guy who came said that it was every 15 years! One of my arguments was that I wasn't too happy with the wiring and meter as it all...

Rafter strengthening for Velux roof window

Chappers, I think interlinked alarms are far safer than fire doors, I'd rather know there was a fire than not know about a fire behind a nice FD30 door. Good idea about getting it submitted, although I will have to apply for planning permission for dormer, but still better to do it now than pay...

Rafter strengthening for Velux roof window

The escape window will have to go at the back due to style of house, which is the same as next doors who have had theirs signed off by BCO. I know the BCO will have to see the joists etc, so when/if I do screw the floor down I will bare this in mind. I can't complete the floor due to where the...

Rafter strengthening for Velux roof window

Thanks masona, just one more quick question. Basically I've put a floor in my loft for storage that is to building regs (copying next door), but I'm not converting my loft at present as I need a dormer for the stairs. I've got hold of a cheap Velux (fire escape) so I'm going to fit it to back of...

Rafter strengthening for Velux roof window

Cheers masona, I was going to do that. Is it ok to screw through the rafters into the end of the trimmers or is it best to attach the trimmers using metal brackets? Cheers

    Old Meter and Fuses

Bloke came to change the meter, which was a lot smaller than the old one. He was happy to put an isolation switch in when I asked. The new meter and isolation switch take up same space as old meter now, but at least power can be cut easily to allow a new consumer unit to be fitted. He said I...

Rafter strengthening for Velux roof window

Thanks for the reply PaulJR. The window just fits in between the 2 purlins, so what you suggest doing sounds fine. Cheers

    Old Meter and Fuses

Cheers for the reply Steve. I actually live in the middle of the street in a residential area! Maybe I could get a lathe fitted in my kitchen and do a spot of turning! My brother is an electricain and is happy to fit a new consumer unit in the future, which will replace the two at present...
