Which way to go, Virgin V+HD box or HD recorder.

We've got a PVR and never use it since we got V+ on the XL package. V+ lets you record two programs and watch one at the same time, which is a good feature. The delay/pause Live TV feature is used very often in our house also, which you would not necessarily get on a PVR. The catch-up...

    Decking protection

Decking Oil. Go to Screwfix. They sell the Cuprinol stuff in three different shades and only charge about £22 for a 5 litre can, which is supposed to cover 50-60 M2. PS. I don't work for Screwfix, they just seem to be one the cheapest for this product!

    Finished Decking

I built some decking for the in-laws a few years ago. We used decking oil to finish the deck, however, regardless of what product you use the deck will weather and fade -and anything coverering up the surface, such as a plant pot, will cause less fading. They had a patio heater that they...

    Decking on my existing patio

A quick note on the DPC issue with decking. I've recently been installing decking (not finished yet) and had the idea of using self adhesive flashing tape to seal the the deck above the DPC. My deck is around 1 inch above the DPC so what I have done is used the tape along the ledger board...

Decking - Flat side up or grooved side up?

I've just taken all my timber back to the merchants and swapped it for a load of cement, chippings and sand. I'll get Mrs Nthused on the job tomorrow to lay a nice plain concrete slab. Much cheaper and harder wearing than decking!!! Only joking....I wouldn't be physically be able to write...

Cooker Changeover. Is it legal for a DIY'er to disconnect?

Thanks for the info Kevindgas, I was supecting this was the case which was why I posted to make sure. Although what seems a simple issue to address (disconnecting the appliances) I think getting a pro in is a small price to pay for what could potentially turn into a disaster if not done...

Cooker Changeover. Is it legal for a DIY'er to disconnect?

Hi All, We're getting an all-gas range cooker delivered next week to replace a built-in gas oven and gas hob. Before the range cooker is fitted I will obviously need to remove the old appliances, cut some worktop out and move some cupboards over to accomodate the wider appliance. I'm...

Decking - Flat side up or grooved side up?

Thanks for that FMT. That's a good point about the grooves making less contact with peoples footwear - I didn't look at it from that angle. I think flat side up could be the way and might be easier to clean as well.

Decking - Flat side up or grooved side up?

Hi All, Just about to lay 40m2 of softwood decking and have been swaying from laying flat profile up or grooved profile up. It seems a lot of designs tend to go with the flat profile these days, I think to emulate the look of hardwood decks, but I'm worried that this may be too slippy...

Protecting Decking Post End Grains on Concrete Flags

Cheers for that Dextrous. I've got a box of Stainless Steel coach screws that will be just the job. Why didn't I think of that...? I was thinking of self adhesive flashing tape but this would possibly fail over time.

    fence posts

I'd go for the concrete-em-in technique. Only reason I say that is that the spikes require you to: 1. Know that you are driving them into earth and nothing solid such as old concrete. 2. Know that you are not driving them into any services! Also I'd say they are probably twice...

Protecting Decking Post End Grains on Concrete Flags

Hi All, I'm starting a project this weekend (weather permitting) which will see me installing a multi level deck over both earth and then a flagged patio at a different level. I'm happy that the patio is solid enough to be used unmodified as a foundation and am planning on putting...

    Worcester Bosch Combi Ignition Lockout

Thanks Tony I think I would tend towards going with the independent engineer. My original quote regarding this fault might be a "no brainer for those in the know" was based on getting a reply from someone in "the know" and also that this may be a common fault for this/these model(s)...

    Venting through fascia

Cheers All, Admittedly it will be a bit tight on there with both the wall plates from behind and the guttering on the front. Unfortunatel,y my house doesn't have a soffit as the eaves stop at the outer skin of the wall. I was thinking of using a slim line rectangle vent to fit into the...

    Venting through fascia

Has anybody ever vented a 1st floor bathroom extractor through the roof space and out through a UPVC fascia? I've seen the special cowelled tiles that can be fixed on the roof line but, for me, venting at the fascia level will be a lot easier and cheaper. Basically, I will be able to...

    Worcester Bosch Combi Ignition Lockout

Hello all, I've got a Worcester Bosch Combi boiler, badged as a British Gas unit but have worked out is either a WB 24CDi, 28CDi or 35CDi model. There seems to be a problem with Ignition Lockout. The unit can be on for either 10 minutes or 10 hours, totally random time period, and...
