Hi All,
We're getting an all-gas range cooker delivered next week to replace a built-in gas oven and gas hob.

Before the range cooker is fitted I will obviously need to remove the old appliances, cut some worktop out and move some cupboards over to accomodate the wider appliance. I'm also fitting a wider hood to suit.

The question is one of disconnection. Assuming that the current hob and cooker have originally been connected properly I guess that at least the hob will have been done with copper and the oven will have a hose. This should have an in-line shutoff valve as the installation is quite recent.

Is it legal for me as a DIY'er to disconnect these appliances, remove the appliances and then arrange for a gas safe engineer to re-connect? I will also shut off at the meter cupboard to be 100% until all works have been completed so there will be less chance of leakage through the valve.

or,

does the cooker supply line need to be capped-off as well as the shut off valve and then re-established when the new appliance is comissioned.

officially no. you need a gassafe registered engineer to decommision the existing appliances and make safe.

from your post i presume you are having a free standing replacement this will require a bayonet fitting and hose for the cooker not the rigid pipework you should have now.

if i was doing the job i would charge £50 for first call and come back when you are ready to install and would charge £35 + parts for second visit
but speak to your guy as everyone charges differently

Thanks for the info Kevindgas,

I was supecting this was the case which was why I posted to make sure.

Although what seems a simple issue to address (disconnecting the appliances) I think getting a pro in is a small price to pay for what could potentially turn into a disaster if not done properly. Add on to this the legal aspect and then invalidating your home insurance to boot!!! not worth risk for the sake of £50.

I'll get a quote for the work in my neck of the woods.
