how much clearance needed under door?

I placed a stack of 4 vinyl bathroom tiles (total thickness 18mm) under the door and opened it fully. it scraped a little but still opened. so there wasn't a full 2 cm clearance all around the door. I've ordered a duralay gold silentfloor underlay 4.2 mm thick, and 8mm laminate from quickstep...

how much clearance needed under door?

I hadn't thought of gluing it down. Providing the sub floor is level enough, would the only drawback to gluing straight on to chipboard be the lack of sound insulation?

nail every tile or every third row?

the building inspector got them to fix the flat roof on the basis that it wasn't weather tight. But he said the tiling on the front is fine. I agree an extra row would look better. I also think water could get behind the 2nd to top row if the wind was blowing hard in the rain. True, the waste...

Hi all, We are about to order some flooring for our new loft room. There is 2 cm clearance between the French doors and the tongue and groove sub floor. The floor is level near the door. What is the maximum total thickness of flooring we should go for on top of the T+G including underlay...

nail every tile or every third row?

well, its seems most of the tiles were nailed. about 8 or 9 were not nailed so they glued those with silicone or something similar. crumbs, is that waste pipe looking a bit suspect? There was extra wood at the side to fix a final row of tiles but nothing to fix to on the front. I asked for a...

nail every tile or every third row?

ha ha, crikey, thanks for reply Woody. BS 5534 "For nibbed tiles at rafter pitches below 60 degrees , two nails should be used to secure each tile in at least every fifth course. For rafter pitches of 60 degrees and above, including vertical, two nails should be used to fix every tile" As these...

nail every tile or every third row?

Hi all, I noticed on our dormer loft conversion that not all the tiles were nailed. When the scaffolding was up I spotted the tile around the toilet waste had slipped. I questioned the builders who said they only nailed every third row of tiles. They say this is better than the usual standard...

Is it possible to level a floor before laying laminate

thanks Vinn. I didn't know the remaining chimney should be swept. the base of the door frame was supplied with drainage holes to allow any rain water to escape though they did have to come back and drill another hole as water was pooling in the door frame a little

Is it possible to level a floor before laying laminate

you're right Vinn, a lot of the work has not been to a professional standard. I was going to ask them not to put the skirting on, but they had already done it. there is a railing across the French doors which the building inspector has approved. yes the pipes stick out too low. the chrome rings...

Is it possible to level a floor before laying laminate

thanks for the replies folks, much appreciated. I was going to take the skirtings off before have flooring fitted. Maybe I can seal the gaps at the junctions of wall and floor with some tape? actually I think silicone or expanding foam would be better to seal the gaps

Is it possible to level a floor before laying laminate

Hi all, we are about to have a laminate or engineered wood floor installed in our new loft conversion. Unfortunately, the work has been pretty sub standard in some areas. The floor slopes more than 1 inch towards the corner and I wondered if there is anyway of leveling this before we ask a...

stop valves on new loft bathroom

The reason I've been coming on here asking advice Steelmasons is that we've spent almost £50k on a loft conversion and the so called loft conversion specialists have been using sub standard tradesmen who have been cutting corners at every opportunity, and telling us one pile of bs after another...

stop valves on new loft bathroom

thanks for reply John. The full bore lever arm valves I have found online say for use with metal pipes. I think the plumber has used 15 mm plastic pipe. I suppose the must be a version for using with plastic pipe

stop valves on new loft bathroom

Hi all, I wondered if building regs stipulate a stop valve on all new bathroom fittings? We are about to have the 2nd fix done on our loft conversion bathroom. The plumber says he can't put one on the shower as there is nowhere to put it which is true. I asked if he could put one on the pipe...

classi seal or mapegum and tape?

Hi all, we are having another go at installing our shower tray. the walls are quite out of square so the tiles wouldn't overlap the tray at the outer edges. We are going to try cutting away the hardibacker at floor level on the left and right side, and sliding the tray under the wall. If the...

    which size fire doors?

Hi all, If anybody could give advice on internal fire doors it would be much appreciated. We need to replace our bedroom and lounge doors with FD 30 doors to meet fire regs after loft conversion. The existing bedroom doors are approximately 706mm wide x 1965mm high. The closest matching size I...

    hanging a heavy tall radiator

The radiator comes with 4 brackets each with 2 holes. If we use the blue Gripits, in theory 1 Gripit per bracket would be more than enough to hold the radiator, I hope. Although i suppose it would be better to take off plasterboard and put extra noggins and make good as others have suggested
