Plasterboard under stairs - building regs?

Hi Ken Thanks for the reply. Yes it is completely new - part of a new extension and the stairs go from the basement up to the ground floor. The staircase double backs on itself so it goes up half a flight, then half landing to turn 180 and then up the the second half. There is always a wall on...

Plasterboard under stairs - building regs?

Had a new stairway put in and we're going to use the void underneath as a cupboard. But do I need to plasterboard the underside of the stairs inside the cupboard to meet building regs? I had a feeling it was a requirement but having googled it, can't find an answer.

Is it too cold to paint?

Serious question. Ready to paint our extension but no heating so it's not much warmer than outside in there at the moment. Want to crack on with the mist coat and then a coat of Matt on the ceilings tomorrow, but as it is so cold, can this cause problems with the paint?

    Boiler for unvented system

I guess what I really need to know is what is the difference between a regular and system boiler, and which one is appropriate for my setup? I think the answer is a system boiler but would quite like that confirmed.

Currently extending my house - will be 5 bed, 4 bath house when done. Currently have an 18kw boiler. Also installing underfloor heating, so I think it is going to struggle.

    Boiler for unvented system

Hi I'm thinking of changing my boiler to a Greenstar 40cdi boiler. I have an unvented indirect hot water cylinder. No cold water tank. Is this boiler suitable for my system? I thought it was but I looked at the product info document on this page and the diagram shows a vented cylinder with...

    Drayton MiTime Programmer Issues

OK, I've managed to rebind it so the programmer shows the correct temperatures for each zone. However, still got the problem of the boiler and pump only activating when the hot water is on. Having looked at the wiring diagram for the MiTime T740R and compared it to the actual wiring, there does...

    Drayton MiTime Programmer Issues

Hi Recently had a new central heating system installed - something is not quite right with it though. I've had a heating engineer out to look at it twice but still not resolved. I have a Drayton MiTime T740R programmer with two MiStat N1 10R thermostats - one for upstairs and one for...

    Vanity unit for undermount basin

I have 3 Duravit undermount basins that I bought cheap brand new off eBay. Plan was to buy the Duravit vanity units and use these basins but Duravit refused to sell me the vanity unit without the basins. So I have now have these 3 basins left over but still have 2 bathrooms to kit out. So I was...

Using a plasterer for Parex render

Currently renovating and extending our house. Had some quotes in for Parex render from approved contractors but my budget is tight. Thinking of getting my plasterer to do the job - he is a quality plasterer and takes time and care to get things spot on. He has done sand and cement render before...

    Birch plywood cabinet

Thanks to everyone for the ideas, I'll look into the different options. As for the raw edges, I do want them exposed rather than mitreing as I like the look of the edges. So should I sand the edges with fine sandpaper and then coat with an oil or varnish? What about just sanding the edges and...

    Birch plywood cabinet

I'm a novice when it comes to carpentry but I want to have a go at making a birch plywood cabinet, which will not have a door. Roughly 2.4m long, 60cm high and 50cm deep. I will then divide it up into 4 sections, by spacing 3 dividers equally. I don't want to be able to see any fixings at...

Traffic noise reduction - which type of fence?

Interesting stuff. Thanks to b3taman for the updates. We're about to buy a house that has a light woodland in the garden and then a train line behind it. Problem is worsened because the station is right next door so it's not a matter of the train just passing by in a few seconds - those that...

    Faulty BGMVSP-2 actuator

Having problems with my hot water - sometimes when I put the HW on, the black plastic lever sticking out the top of the actuator (BGMVSP-2) doesn't move across so the valve doesn't open and the HW doesn't come on. However, if i apply some pressure to the lever, it moves across and the HW comes...

Fixing a 75mm fence post to a brick wall

Only reason I was thinking Thunderbolts was I'd read a few people recommend them. I can remove the post after drilling - would you use something like this to do the job: http://www.screwfix.com/c/screws-nails-fixings/frame-fixings/cat840068 It's a 3ft fence so the post won't be...
