    large building project over staircase

allowing for the 2m headroom over the stairs, I've spotted a way to create a huge amount of useful cupboard space over a stairwell. Has anyone similar to this and what are the implications re: building regs, and notifying freeholder. bert

snapped gate valve on mains water inlet

thanks for all the helpful feedback. the council who own most of the block, want written notification just to get someone to come round and turn off the water supply in an emergency, +the details of an insured plumber. shame a caretaker couldnt be called in on the job like 'in the old...

    plaster admix?

I've redone a small stud wall with plasterboard, but had to use leftover plasterboard to hand (cos I cant be bothered to carry new sheet all the way up again), so consequesntly I didnt follow best practice - some board segments only span 1 stud and not all are staggered. But the boards a...

snapped gate valve on mains water inlet

doh!, didnt think about the taps downstairs open not making much difference, glad i left this for the weekend. I'll look to hire/borrow a water pump and connect it to the pipework further down, maybe one of those car 'jet washers' should do the trick if it creates a suction force in the...

snapped gate valve on mains water inlet

It's about 40/50 years so imperial i guess, [the steel pipe it's stopping is roughly 28 mm external diameter. the steel is screwed into the valve] if I undo the gate mechanism and remove the lot, what guarantee is there that i can stop the flow from where the tap was (about 1 bar pressure)...

services for under stair washing machine

top idea stem, I just wasnt thinking laterally,... rubber tubing to the kitchen. at least i can kick it if it causes trouble, unlike solvented together pvc.

services for under stair washing machine

surely as long as the output of the w/m here is higher than the eventual connection to waste (1ft off floor) then gravity will take care of everything -apart from the standing water. (terraced house, no outside drain). can raise the wm if necessary sounds like a farce indeed, but a washer...

    stix -all

never heard of it before but it seems to have great properties for lots of diy jobs, more costly that no more nails, but better grab strength and flex. anyone used it long enough to know how it wears?

    Dremel - list uses

used one to 'join' the drill holes for a 1 1/2 hole in cast iron soil pipe. took the best part of an hour but I just couldnt risk shattering the pipe with a heavy tool, would have cost 1000's if I'd got it wrong. i always keep it handy as a last (but time consuming) resort.

services for under stair washing machine

hmm, after taking up some stairs, I've finally found a way to get 40mm through to the kitchen! but...the pipe will still run flat along the floor for 3 metres and then 90 degree up for 1 ft into the waste. where would a pump need to help it along here?

services for under stair washing machine

ouch, I was hoping to avoid routing 1 1/4, now not even confident that will do it ?? maybe a w/machine with a really hi quality filter, if there is one. I will stay with the 22m and reduce the bend angle to 60 so i can stuff a pipe brush when required, thanx.

render internal brick wall for sound

I;ve taken off about 1.5 cm of plaster render to a fairly clean finish because it was roller painted and want rid of the texture. whats the most cost effective way to redo this 2.5x4 m wall, 3:1 sand cement with plasticiser and coloured dye? (dont want to paint it) i figured it is...

services for under stair washing machine

I've got to allow for services to this space before the floors go down etc... I can get 22m pipe out to kitchen waste via a 4 metre run and 3 90 deg bends. This means a lot of standing water, but am assuming it shouldnt be a problem for blockages because final rinse is usually clear?. bert

    adding socket to boiler supply

I've got a broom cupboard with a gas heater in it that the installer has provided power for (via isolator switch)by what looks like a branch off the ring main. what are the options for adding a couple of sockets to power a washing machine and pc. It looks like sturdy flat 2.5mm 3 core single...

    wall mounted wc leak

I've installed a frame fitted wc, push button not syphon action, but notice that that the flush valve is not quite water tight and cant seem to see an easy way to change it. I dont want to take the whole thing out though for a replacement - is it a user servicable part?

    skimming over pipes

hi forum 2 pipes (15mm copper hot and cold) will be chased through a breeze wall that will be skimmed with rapid set floor tile cement, i've got concerns to do with 1) proximity to each other they will be close together and I want to minimise heat loss from the hot to the cold - thinking...

    wet room

I've read a fair few examples on how to deck out a tanked room in 18 or 25mm wbp, but in my situation wall space is a bit critical and I would prefer not to lose the thickness of a sheet of ply on one of the walls, so I'd have a situation where bare breezeblock wall meets the ply on the floor...

    large hole in stud wall

thanks, it seems to be exactly as you describle, (non supporting). as far as heat, I thought about drilling 2 inch holes either side of frame, and mount some mini fans like you get in a pc, with foil ducting into the room. realistically I'm hoping that by the time I can afford one, they...

    large hole in stud wall

I've got a 5 metre wall with studs at about 14 inches and as im redoing all the plasterboard. I thought it a good opportunity to [if its legal] to create a 40 x 30 rectangle to recess a plasma screen in future. There is a long wooden lintel top and bottom of it. joists run parallel to the...

    power socket in floor

thanks thats a top idea, 15 amp rated twin pole isolator switch it is. the boards screw up/down quite easy so I'll give the conduit a miss, thanks. bert
