New timber sash windows - big gaps on the inside?

Thank you Harry and mrrusty - I asked them while they were doing it, and they said it was sand & cement, so just regular mortar. I've just read that trowelling mastic has as plasticizer in it to help with movement/flexibility, so guess that would have been much better. I also understand I'm...

New timber sash windows - big gaps on the inside?

Hello again everyone, just an update. They are finished on the inside, photo attached. Looks neatly finished to my untrained eye. Confused about the exterior though. They haven't finished, but as you can see they've chosen to finish the sides with mortar. I'd asked them at the start whether...

New timber sash windows - big gaps on the inside?

Thank you Crank / Notch / John! Sounds like everything is proceeding as it should then. It's slightly odd as when they originally came to measure up, they removed some of the external pvc trim and pointed out the reveal, saying that the new sash windows would fit in here (and therefore wider...

New timber sash windows - big gaps on the inside?

Thanks Cross Thread, that's helpful and puts my mind at rest a bit! I also hope those gaps don't affect soundproofing - I went for thicker 6.4mm laminated glass in one of the panes, a bit pointless if the frame isn't well sealed!

New timber sash windows - big gaps on the inside?

Hello all, I'm having some new softwood timber windows installed as I write. They are replacing some top-hung pvc windows (that I think replaced the original sash windows long before I moved in). If relevant, they are spiral balance rather than cords & weights. Confused/slightly concerned about...

Pulling new cables through existing routing (stuck cable/mortar)

Thanks on all counts, Simon. Yeah, my fear is getting them stuck part way. It seems like it should be a fairly straight run, and there's a little excess cable I have pulled and it seems to be moving quite smoothly. Fingers crossed. Is this the sort of draw wire I should be aiming to use...

Pulling new cables through existing routing (stuck cable/mortar)

Thanks Simon, that looks to be the case to the letter! I've done some more hacking, no joy. Reluctant to hack around it given I don't really know what I'm doing and no guarantee it will actually result in success. By coincidence I was actually looking at Cat6 cable today given it's slimmer)...

Pulling new cables through existing routing (stuck cable/mortar)

Thanks. Alas, tried the Mini box but hadn't factored in the delay in picture/sound. The rooms are open to each other (just I can't see the tv) but can hear the mismatch between the rooms so doesn't work.

Pulling new cables through existing routing (stuck cable/mortar)

Hi Chivers, the recess/plate is actually in a solid brick (external) wall.

Pulling new cables through existing routing (stuck cable/mortar)

Hello all! Wasn't sure whether to post this here or in the Audio Visual section, but I guess here makes more sense as I don't need advice on the AV tech itself.... Background: My flat (victorian conversion) was refurbished 4 years ago. They routed an RF/Coax cable from the lounge to the...

Polystyrene beads bottom of boiler + water dripping

Hello all! A damp patch on the wall under my boiler started forming a couple of months ago. Unscrewing a panel below the boiler, a whole bunch of polystyrene beads came out. I understand these would have been used as wall insulation. The boiler was only installed 3 years ago (had a service...

Trim for new timber sash windows - £15/metre?!

Sorry, yes, I meant the warm edge spacer between the panes. Awesome, thanks for that, super helpful. My overthinking is over. For now :-)

Trim for new timber sash windows - £15/metre?!

Ha, yes, overthinking is a bit of a speciality of mine. Especially now with little else to do.... LAST question (I promise) - in the windows themselves, I don't like black spacers (I feel it just stands out and looks odd against white everything else). White or grey spacer both fine, nothing...

Trim for new timber sash windows - £15/metre?!

Really helpful advice, thanks both. I'm going to leave out the trim altogether as far as the installation goes. At least then in the unlikely event they've left larger gaps than there should be, it'll be immediately apparent even to me, and they won't be hidden behind trim. I've requested that...

Trim for new timber sash windows - £15/metre?!

So the existing upvc casements are about 70mm deep, the new sash will be 145mm. But there is stil enough depth to fit in the reveal. The available width on the inside is wider than the width of the external brickwork (if that makes sense). So presumably on the inside the trim would be to cover...

Trim for new timber sash windows - £15/metre?!

Thanks Harry! I thought it might look a bit odd to have timber windows and then upvc trim? Though I appreciate the upvc is much improved and comes with a timber effect foil now.

Trim for new timber sash windows - £15/metre?!

Thanks yet again! I'm honestly not sure why quadrant trim was suggested,I just assumed that was their "style". Would there normally be a reason for using that specific type of trim? What other options would there be? Like a standard rectangular trim?

Trim for new timber sash windows - £15/metre?!

That's exactly the profile they have quoted, thanks. And yes, the price there is exactly what I was expecting. Presumably I can get any profile I fancy? Is there a "standard" one that is generally used in Victorian sash windows? While we're on the topic of hardwood vs pine. The windows...

Trim for new timber sash windows - £15/metre?!

Thanks diy_fun! Appreciate the links, they're very helpful. Good question about what type of trim is required. On the quote it's specified as "20mm x 20mm quarter round trim/quadrant", and it goes all around the perimeter of the windows both inside and out.

Trim for new timber sash windows - £15/metre?!

Hello all! I'm getting round to replacing some shoddy pvc windows in my flat (Victorian conversion) with softwood timber sash. I'm using a company that manufactures in Poland (it seems to be well-regarded from the research I've been able to do). In any event, the cost of the 5 windows is...
