    RCD/RCBO

Paragraph headed "Mains power" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Current_limiting Does this mean the MCBs protect against over current?

    Garden Wall

I'd incorporate 'pillar' type constructions every 1.5 meters or so - Basically a single skin of bricks leading to a pilar (1.5 bricks by 1.5 bricks) leading to the next single skin and then another pillar construction another 1.5 meters along the length.

    RCD/RCBO

Thanks for that - don't understand the over-current though? What is this? How does it occur? Are RCBOs the only way to combat this or are there other products which can be installed to combat this?

    RCD/RCBO

Hi all, I've read quite a few posts about RCD's and RCBO's - what is the actual difference between the 2? As I understand it, an RCBO is a type of RCD but has over-current protection built in - In layman's terms, what is this? Under which circumstances does this occur? Is it more...

    Decking

Thanks for that - I take it that you can get products which can be painted on to softwood decking to make it look like hardwood decking though right? Cuprinol or that sort of thing?

I saw that the hardwood was literally double the price of the soft and so wanted to know what the difference between the 2 is? Is there a major difference between the 2 to justify the price increase? Or is it just a way for retailers to make some money? Also, when it comes to treating the...

    Idea Standard Boiler Dial

Hi all, I recently moved into a house with an Ideal Standard boiler with a dial on it rating from 1 to 6. Just wondering what this dial controls? Thanks.

Thanks guys, just checked out some shops today - what's the main difference between the hardwood and softwood type of decking? What are the main differences and wat is everyone's advice on which is better?

    Isolator Switch for Shower

Not an electrician, but I think you need an isolator that can handle 37A. Something like this will work: http://www.screwfix.com/p/45amp-ceiling-pull-cord-c-w-neon/65116 The RCD will as I understand it, will make sure that more power is not sent through your cables than is needed and this...

    Decking

Many thanks for that. If I were to use treated wood, what on average would be the life span of the deck and frame work below it? I live in Essex to give you an idea of the weather. Also, are timber merchants best for the supply of wood? They do standard decking etc?

    Decking

Lol.... unfortunately, that's exactly what i need to know - how to build one.... ? How do I keep the frame work dry to begin with? Other than treating it with preserver as I'm sure this will fade after a few years and then would the entire deck need to be lifted up and frame work replaced and...

Had a look at those results, they don't really have the answers that I'm looking for to be honest?

    Decking

Hi all, I'm thinking of putting in some decking in my garden come spring time ready for the summer. But am a little unsure about how to do this. As you walk out of the back door, I have a patio area and then a lawn. Now if I put the decking down, it would go over the patio and partly on...

    Garden lighting

Thanks for that, I do live in England and so this would apply to me. Would it maybe be cheaper to just call in an electrician who can do the work and self certify it? - Does the electrician also have to inform the local council of the work that he/she has carried out?

    Garden lighting

Hi all, Just thinking out loud - I'm thinking of putting in a decked area in my garden this summer and am thinking of also installing decking lights. Now must these be hardwired into the house's consumer unit or is it permissable under law to basically wire these to a plug and plug them...

    Shower causes lights to dim

Hi all, Whenever the shower is switched on, it causes the lights around the house to dim. I know this is due to the shower using a large amount of electricity and is not really a problem as such, but just wondering is there is anything that can be done to stop this from happening? Thanks.

Garage lights and sockets failed - old wiring issues I think

That doesn't sound right to be honest. I'm not an qualified electrician, but you sound as if you're not to confident with electrics and maybe don't know what is going on. I would call an electrician in to have this looked at the last thing you want to do is to hurt yourself trying to fix this.

    Chimney breast removal

My advice would be to remove the chimney breast up above the bedroom ceiling - or you'll have a big set of gallows brackets on show in the bedroom. As long as there is more of the chimney stack below the roof height than above it, it's safe and secure using gallows brackets, a metal plate and...
