Hi all, I recently moved into a house with an Ideal Standard boiler with a dial on it rating from 1 to 6. Just wondering what this dial controls?

Thanks.

The temperature of the water in the Boiler & Radiators
in winter keep this at around "5"
if the Hot water is by Gravity, you may need to turn it down, especially in Summer 1-2 should be sufficient and prevent scalding hot tap water ;)

Sorry for the late reply and many thanks for that.

There is also a thermostat on the hallway wall though? Why do they have in essence 2 thermostats? - 1 on the boiler and one in the hallway? Do these not more or less do the same job?

The room stat controls the air temperature in the living space. It will be switching either a pump or a zone valve (depending on system type) on or off to maintain the space at the temp set on the room stat. The boiler stat controls the temp of the water going through the rads in simple terms.
