I recently had a Glow Worm Ultracom 30cxi combi installed. My installer said that there is an exernal temp sensor availble for this model and it would be worth fitting one. What are the advantages of this? (and where could I purchase the sensor)

I think the rad valves can sometimes leak - ours didn't. Replacing the odd valve is a lot cheaper than new pipework. I suppose it depends on the condition of your system and how much you want to spend.

Not sure what you mean by fitting, however we have just had a new combi fitted on a system which used to supplied by a Spacesaver. You can put a new boiler on old pipework and rads but you must have it powerflushed first and it is good practice to instal a "Magnaclean" device in the pipework...

Good point namsag - to be honest I couldn't believe this pre-heat thing when I first came across it, for the reasons you mention

I did wonder about that, however we have had a few showers now and no shutdowns. Boiler can supply 12 l/min and I don't think we are exceeding that.

Says in the manufacturer's literature "not suitable for combi boiler systems" (they are designed for low pressure hot suply)

After reading simond's reply, I read the main manual more closely and it is possible to set up a second channel on the programmer to time pre-heat (this is not stated in the users manual). I have set it for morning getting-up time only.

Thanks for the replies. In reality, a quick swill of the hands in the downstairs loo would probably not bring hot through even with pre-heat, due to the distance. With a shower or bath, the amount of water wasted in proportion to that used would be reatively little. All down to personal...
