Cold water tank overflowing: iced up?

My cold water tank overflow is being used, causing a nasty patch of ice where it lands on the driveway. The cold water tank has never overflowed before. Symptoms are: * Cistern seems to take a long time to shut off. * Ballcock was lying below the surface of the water. I had to pull it to...

    Two burst pipes in loft

Thanks John. I susepect it may be more than condensation. There are patches of moisture on the floor, where it's dripped down. I'm sure I could chuck a couple of bits of wood over the top to act as a lid. Anyway, the tank is now nice and quiet. But I've never seen the overflow active...

    Two burst pipes in loft

A problem has occured with, I think, the ballcock on the cold water tank. I don't know if its related to the repairs I have made (flexible connector restricting flow?) * The cold water overflow was active earlier this afternoon * The ballcock seems to take ages to close * There is evidence...

    Two burst pipes in loft

I think I've fixed it now. 1 and a half days to fix the first one, about 30 mins to fix the second one (which was in an inaccessible position). The first one had a larger split. I had to take out nearly 7 inches of pipe. So, I decided to go for broke and install a flexible connector. Will it...

    Two burst pipes in loft

Worst comes to the worst,I could use a flexible connector. But 300mm is a bit longer than I need!

    Two burst pipes in loft

OK. that explains it. I was just cutting at the perimeters of the "scar", so a straight connector would be the same length as the gap.

    Two burst pipes in loft

Is that 2 x couplers and 1 x copper pipe segment? If so, best to make them up downstairs, one of the locations near the cistern is pretty inaccessible. Which reminds me, I'll have to get a powerful lamp...

    Two burst pipes in loft

I didn't spot anything like this in Wickes. Do the other sheds sell them? Otherwise, I will have to make up something suitable. Thanks Mike

    Two burst pipes in loft

Two burst pipes in my loft! Fortunately, the loft insulation absorbed most of the spillage. Actually, the bursts were in 2 places on the same main cold pipe up to the cistern. All pipes havesleeving, so a bit of a suprise. I patched one up near the cistern using a bit of garden hose. The...

    Fence post: PostCrete recommended?

A fence post has blown over in the recent gales in Northern England last week. The post is concereted in, so I'll have to dog out and replace. * The post is 1.6 m high above ground (it has a 5ft panel). Will a 2.1 m post be OK? * I plan to use PostCrete. Is this a good idea? Will one bag be...

Plastic dustbin: hinge for lid is missing

I reported this using the council web site. They are sending me a brand new bin! So much for the council's recycling policy...

Plastic dustbin: hinge for lid is missing

In our area, we have a plastic dustbin full of garden waste collected every 2 weeks by the council. After the latest collection, one of the hinges on my bin lid is now missing. This is a piece of cylindrical plastic that the bin lid pivots on. Any ideas for a cheap fix? Thanks Mike

    TRV grub screw

Fitting a replacement TRV head. The head has a grub screw on it, with an Allen key hole. I place the head onto the valve assembly. Should I fasten the grub screw then? Or should I push the valve all the way in, then fasten the grub screw? Thanks Mike

Glowworm SpaceSaver boiler: adjusting the pilot light

My 20 yr old Glowworm SpaceSaver II boiler recently developed a problem where the pilot light wouldn't stay alight. A new thermocouple and gas valver were fitted (150 quid) by a heating engineer and the unit now works OK, apart from one problem. The pilot light is now very strong and it sounds...

    Minimising fridge noise

Sorry to keep on about this, but fridges seem to be far too noisy... Before I went to bed last night, I pulled the fridge out from under the worktop and turned it by 90 degrees. It was resting on a thin kitchen mat on top of the laminate flooring. Suprisingly, the noise level in the adjacent...

    Minimising fridge noise

I have been looking at the back of the fridge unit. Would it be safe/beneficial to stuff some insulating foam under and around the compressor unit? However, I expect the compressor unit might get warm... Mike

    Minimising fridge noise

That's the under-counter larder fridge. Mine has an ice box. I suppose ice box fridges will need the compressor pump to operate more frequently. Underpowered -- Maybe that explains why the compressor keeps coming on, even on a setting of 1. It only woke me up 3 times last night :)...
