Is it crazy to do a rear extension before loft conversion?

It's just been pointed out to me that doing it this way, the scaffolding for the loft would have to go partly into my neighbour's garden, so I don't think I'll be donig it this way after all.

What are some other 'quality' options besides bifold doors?

I'm liking the look of Kloeber aluminium French doors at the moment, although I've yet to check what the price difference is between these and bifolds. I like the sound of aluminium French doors with glazed panels either side.

Is it crazy to do a rear extension before loft conversion?

My big plan is to do both: loft conversion and rear ground floor extension. Conventionally you would do the loft first, extension after which makes sense. Now that I think doing both isn't quite within my budget, I'm thinking the extension is going to benefit us the most so I'd rather do...

What's the thermostat on the storage tank for?

But isn't that what the thermo on the boiler itself is doing?

What's the thermostat on the storage tank for?

This might be a silly question but we use a gas boiler that fires up on demand and the hot water goes into a storage tank. The boiler has it's own thermostat (1-6) that regulates the temp of the water it heats. There is also a thermo on the storage tank set to 60 deg. But what's the point of...

Next door loft conversion - best approach re: party wall?

Sounds like a sensible way to go. Is there a term for this kind of arrangement? They're called PSG based in Harrow (nowhere near me).

Next door loft conversion - best approach re: party wall?

I just received a letter out of the blue from a party wall surveyor saying they've noticed our neighbour is planning to convert their loft and strongly urging us to allow them to act as surveyor to help protect our side of the party wall, with our neighbours being liable for their costs...

Tips for unscrewing 'slot style' bottle trap base?

Thanks for the replies - got me thinking along the right lines. In the end I found an old novelty key ring that was just the right size and did the job.

Tips for unscrewing 'slot style' bottle trap base?

I've got one of those chrome bottle traps and I want to unscrew the base. It's not one you can grab with your hand but it has a big slot in it, like the kind designed to use with a coin but a lot bigger. I can't get any purchase on in with any coin as the slot is so big. Anyone got any smart...

Aha, I think the stuff is called kaowool. Now I just have to find out where I can buy a small piece!

What's the wool stuff in my fireplace and where do I buy it?

The best I can describe it is fibrous cotton wool, or even candyfloss, you cold say. Not matting or rope. Is asbestos wool used these days? It's a very modern fireplace.

What's the wool stuff in my fireplace and where do I buy it?

We have a modern gas fireplace (previous owner's) that has heat retaining, artificial 'rocks' sitting on top of a layers of woolly fibre that is in a cut-to-shape sheet. Whats the correct term for this and where would I go to get it replaced (it's a bit old and manky) I've been googling...

Can I connect bath and sink waste pipes?

If this kind of system is not allowed any more, what are you meant to do about it? I am also in a 1930s house and have the same system - bath waste water goes into hopper and then into an open drain. No smells (yet) but it's not a very good system.

How to change Hotpoint Aquarius WT740 door seal

Thanks. It looks pretty taut to me but I'll give a try. Got to come off somehow hasn't it? Also, do you know how I remove the lower front plastic cover (the one right by floor level). I'm assuming I need to take this off in order to unscrew the main fascia?

How to change Hotpoint Aquarius WT740 door seal

Hi all, I've looked at the other threads and watched the youtube vids etc. about changing door seals. One thing I'm stuck on is how to remove the outer retaining clasp that goes around the outer lip of the door seal. It looks like a thin metal wire band with two loops at the end, that hook...

Radiators hot when heating turned off!

After a BG inspection, it was suggested sludge was preventing the valve from working properly. Had a Magnaclean installed which shoyuld fix the problem. I was concerned I was being talked into buying a bit of useless kit but from what I've read online, it's a genuinely useful gadget and the...
