We have a modern gas fireplace (previous owner's) that has heat retaining, artificial 'rocks' sitting on top of a layers of woolly fibre that is in a cut-to-shape sheet.

Whats the correct term for this and where would I go to get it replaced (it's a bit old and manky)

I've been googling 'rock wool' but no of the links resemble the material I have.

Is it like an asbestos wool or mat or rope etc?

The best I can describe it is fibrous cotton wool, or even candyfloss, you cold say. Not matting or rope.

Is asbestos wool used these days? It's a very modern fireplace.

Aha, I think the stuff is called kaowool.

Now I just have to find out where I can buy a small piece!

I know the stuff you mean and yes, it is hard to find and then it comes in big bags.

Call Milligans in Burnley, Lancashire; if they don't know, nobody will.
