Radiators hot when heating turned off!

I have a similar problem. Where generally would the motorised valve be? I have a Grundfos pump installed - does that contain the valve that is failing and letting hot water into the rads?

    Grundfos pump suddenly very noisy?

It was a while ago but in the end it seemed to be the thermostat failing, causing the boiler to overheat. The pump itself wasn't the cause.

Leaving a garden unattended for months

I think this is the best option. Have you tried it yourself? Just wondering what the downsides will be - besides probably not doing the grass any good.

Leaving a garden unattended for months

I know the obvious answers are concrete it over or get someone to come round and mow the lawn every so often, but what if neither of those are an option? What steps could I take to prevent a garden becoming overgrown if I had to leave it unattended for several months? I'm not too bothered...

    Exterior sandy render falling off

Just went to B&Q and seen they do a small bag of ready mixed mortar for small jobs - literally just add water. I think I'll give that ago. Thanks for the smoothing off with a sponge tip.

    Exterior sandy render falling off

thanks for the tips. It does look like someone in the past did a patchup job around a PVC fame and just didn't get the mortar mix right in that spot. I would prefer to knock it all out and refill but what exactly do I need to make the mortar mix (and what are the exact ratios etc.)...

    Exterior sandy render falling off

I was wondering if anyone had any advice about this... The exterior of our 1930s build house is coated in a sandy render with stone chips embedded it it (I don't know what the correct term for this kind of finish is). Anyway, small areas of it have now started to crumble - literally to sand -...

Can wooden fence posts be used to hold a washing line?

This is a Homebase version. http://tinyurl.com/29cze6 It goes 750mm into the ground so *should* be quite stable? I realise that long term there probably will be some movement though. Just trying to find ways to avoid the whole concrete mixing palaver!

Can wooden fence posts be used to hold a washing line?

Do you think a couple of fence posts placed in the ground using metal holding spikes similar to this: http://www.sabrefix.co.uk/products_fencefix_view.php?id=72 would support a washing line? I'd be happy not to have to mix concrete, pour it into ground etc. and these are meant to be a...

Newly installed shower not shutting off properly

The pump sits on the attic floor, next to the hot water storage tank. The cold water tank is on a raised platform, higher than the hw storage tank. The pump doesn't feed the loo, no, just the shower. But the shower does have two heads though (overhead and hand shower). Not sure about the...

Newly installed shower not shutting off properly

I've just had a shower put in with a Salamander pump in the loft. It's been ok the last few days but tonight I used it and after switching off the shower mixer, I could hear the pump repeatedly powering up and down, as if it thought I was switching the shower off and on repeatedly. It didn't...

Moving hot water cylinder to loft. Should I upgrade?

Yes the builder is in the process of raising the cold water tank onto a platform, below which the cylinder will go. At the moment the HW is heated by a boiler and stored in the cylinder. I'm guessing the heating times will therefore be unaffected, and it will just be the convenience of having...

Moving hot water cylinder to loft. Should I upgrade?

I'm in the process of getting our hot water storage cylinder moved into the loft to create space in the bathroom. Eventually we will also be adding a pump to provide higher pressure showers. My question is, would you recommend that I ditch the current tank, which is, 36" x 18", and swap it...

    Anyone used Sottini baths?

Any experiences with Sottini baths? I don't know much about them other than they use Idealcast, which apparently is a form of resin. From stuff I've read on the net, this seems to be the same material used by Ideal Standard (unless it's ccoincidentally the same name). Trying to decide between...

British Gas says I need new thermostat. Is this right?

Cut a long story short: the engineer was dodgy. Reported the fault as fixed when in fact he never came back to us. Also reported that we had not been in for the return visit when we had been. Finally took 2 more BG visits by a different engineer (thank god). This one replaced the thermostat...

Payment up front for plumbing work

Can I ask roughly what percentage deposit you would ask for?

Payment up front for plumbing work

Can I ask the board what people ask for/have been asked for in terms of payment up front for plumbing work (in my case it's a bathroom refit and we are supplying all the main fittings/furniture etc). Is half up front, the rest on completion normal? What are the going percentages at the...
