    which grout?

I am now ready to grout my tiles in the bathroom having removed all the old grout. Can anyone advise which type of grout is best. All the DIY shops seem to stock tile grout and adhesive in one pot. I have bought Unibond mix yourself stuff but which is really the best?

    grout removal suggestion

I just thought I would mention that I found a really good little gadget for removing grout from bathroom tiles. The original grout looked as if it had been put on with a trowel in my new house, although the tiles were ok, I was told it was a terrible job to remove it and I would be better off...

    interior wall painting

Thanks for all your help, however I have discovered on revealing more of the walls that they are in such a bad state I will have to have them skimmed anyway. :?, but is it still a good idea to use pva glue after skimming and before painting?, it is an old house with granite walls, there are some...

    attic extension - insulation

Sorry, forgot to say that planning permission was given last year and on purchasing the house, the plans came with it. The roof already has 2 velux windows put in and the plans are for a dormer also. I am aware that permission only lasts for 5 years however I am thinking of putting a staircase...

    damp inside walls

the house is in a very exposed and high area so weather is probably a factor in this, there is no flowerbed beneath the patio doors and about a two foot drop to the patio itself. (must remember that after a couple of drinks in the Summer!!). The house is an end terrace and the damp seems to be...

    interior wall painting

Thanks for your advice, I thought that PVA glue might work, should I still sand down the wall anyway to reduce the flaking?, could you also advise me on what to use on window recess walls as they seem to get fairly damp. I am in the process of trying to establish the problem however just to be...

    interior wall painting

I have just stripped the walls in my house and notice that under the wall paper the wall has been painted in white. Some of this white comes off on the wall paper and what remains is quite flaky. I don't want to wall paper the walls as I would prefer to paint them. Do I need to sand them, or...

    damp inside walls

The bedroom in my house has deep recessed windows and I have noticed that the walls in the recess are suffering from damp. Could it be lack of ventilation or could it be that the seal around the double glazed window which does not seem to fit properly is causing this. I also have a small...

Thanks for your advice Tex, those colours sound a bit radical! The house has a cottagy feel to it which I was hoping to maintain, but your idea is definitely food for thought

    holes in my tiles

Thank you diyisfun, I think I have been left some spare tiles so I'll probably use them, how easy is it to take a tile off the wall and replace. Is there a good method to use?

    holes in my tiles

The bathroom in the house I have just moved in to is fully tiled, presumably with the towel rail, shelf and cabinet drilled into the tiles. I want to revamp the bathroom and change the accessories. If I remove them I will be left with holes in the tiles. What is the best way to disguise these...

    bathroom cabinet

I have a mahogany bathroom cabinet that I would like to lighten up. (It's only mahogany in colour, probably bought from a DIY store so I'm not sure what the wood is). I don't really want to paint it white or any other solid colour, does anyone have any suggestions?. I don't mind trying out...

    more condensation problems

Thanks for all your replies, It would seem that condensation is now the least of my worries, when the Lone Ranger and Tonto decided to add an extension onto my 1890's cottage they neglected to follow any basic rules, consequently I have now discovered that the roof slates do not overhang the...

    more condensation problems

Thank you for your replies, does this mean that I need bigger radiators or has the double glazing just not been installed correctly?. This morning I awoke to a pool of water on my window ledge, this happens not just in the room I sleep in but all the rooms facing South.

    more condensation problems

I have recently moved into a house which has uPVC double glazed windows, every morning I have condensation running down inside the windows. Without having to have the windows open all day (I am at work so this is not very practical) and without freezing to death when at home how can I cure the...
